A peaceful scene. If only it was known what really happens when the tower tolls in the midnight hours. Local legends have it the tower glows and eerie bells ring out the doom of the visitor. Enticing and quiet, it appears in the sunlight, alluring wayward travelers to its streets. Later, in darkness, ominous figures pour out of doorways, up from sewer drains and down from the trees. Yes, you only come to this serene vista once in your lifetime.

Word of the Day: Dream (from 2016)

“To die, to sleep – to sleep, perchance to dream – ay, there’s the rub, for in this sleep of death what dreams may come…” (Hamlet)

To die, to sleep, perchance to dream? All I want is to sleep! One night, no dreams, no thoughts running through my head.

To die? Well I’m not that desperate yet. As a matter of fact I did die once, and before you ask, no, niet, nada. Not a light, not an angel, no pearly gates, nothing. I didn’t even know I actually “passed on” till I read the doctor’s report of my death. Talk about an eyeopener, literally! A second time I thought I was dying and so did everyone else in the room, doctors and nurses included. That was scary, because I realized what was happening.

This week while family gathered, we were joking around, speaking about the ages of different ones. I mentioned something about I’ll be dead before then, and my daughter pipes up, “weren’t you dead already, a couple of times? You’ll outlive all of us!” We all laughed, and I said, “Oh, my, God help us all!” And I meant it. I’m already getting what I describe as crotchety, proven today by losing patience with my 13 year old grandson. He’s emulating the “drive you nuts, but I’m lovable” style of his older brother. He and his older sister were here to wrap presents and the day before was horribly busy and tiring. Having only two hours sleep, I was not my usually grandma persona. And they don’t believe me if I say that’s enough, I’m serious! Because I’m not usually serious. And they can make me smile even if I’m mad. Does that make me a pushover?

Back to the sleep. After today’s wrapping half the day and entertaining the ten year old tonight, I’m tired. Why can’t I sleep? It’s 5:22 AM. I’m writing this because sleep just won’t come. Hamlet had it easy.

“Of course I’m pleased, Sara!” Foggie admired her reflection in the sea. “I enjoy being different. See all the ordinary lighthouses up and down the coast? Why would I want to look like everyone else? And this new spiky updo? You are the best! I also appreciate you coming to me, because of course I must remain stationery. Not everyone would be so accommodating.”

Foggie was just one of the appreciative lighthouse structures in the world. Sara had flown to remote locations to serve her loyal customers. One of the things she enjoyed most about these excursions was the gossip. As in any beauty parlor, there were always interesting stories related by the clientele.

“Well Foggie, I must be going now. I have to catch a red eye to New England. They really are not served well there, and hardly any difference between customers. But I’m gaining on them and soon they will each have their own personality. Toodleoo!”

Rights for All!

I said to him, “Charlie, that’s no way to protest!” But you know Charlie, he’s such a “I’m king of the world” type, thinks he’s invincible, and everyone loves him. He figured the only way people would see that anyone should be accepted to join the military, was to make a spectacle of himself. Brazened tattoos, pink shirt, and all! Gotta love Charlie, right, Dad?

Frustrated Artist

Joe was an extraordinary artist. Unfortunately, he was the only one that thought so. Using his inheritance, he traveled the world to see art concepts and artists’ works, ancient and new. Coming home he painted for days and decided to take his works to galleries to be sold. After two month’s time beseeching gallery owners to feature his works, he gave up. At midnight he gathered every type of paint and marker he owned, stepped outside his apartment, and what you see above is the result.
