Day 6
For the 2022 November
PAD Chapbook Challenge,
poets are tasked with
writing a poem a day in the
month of November.
Day 6 looks to the news of
the day.

November in the USA, a month for voters

Perils await them, cited by zealous doters

Intimidation and threats portrayed

As if they think they could raid

The will, and honesty of ordinary men

Who are desperate to defy the trends

Of vicious armed supporters of a few

As if their lies were all they knew

Nevertheless the strong will prevail

And vote, ignoring the intimidation trail

And exercise their citizenship with pride

The threats invoked will be denied.

Life

Trust yourself
Let down your guard
Forget ego and focus on kindness
to forgive
In the end as it comes to us all
we forget the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow we constantly strove for
and remember.
We are merely a brief thought,
a willow leaf stirred by the breath of the universe.

Thirsty

He woke up surrounded by sand. “Oh cool” he thought, “I’m at the beach, I love the beach!” He was almost used to the time travel lurch, the waking up in a new place and wondered if this might be in the nineteenth century since the sand was clean and pristine. He slowly stood up and found he was not at a beach but in a desert, surrounded by nothing but constant waving sand as the hot breeze drifted the tiny grains. The sun was extremely hot and he felt his tongue was rough against his cheek and gums. He tried gathering some saliva into his mouth but the action choked him. He opened his mouth and felt with his fingers—nothing but a dry film, of what? And then he realized it was sand! I must have fallen asleep in my journey, and reached for his handy water bottle. It wasn’t there. Of course it wasn’t, he thought again, because it’s a twenty first century item and he couldn’t take it on any trip to…to…where was he anyway? He looked around and the thirst he experienced was now dangerously closing his throat. It must be a trick by my colleagues, he grimaced, thinking that okay, this is a joke but it needs to be over. “Get me back to the lab!” He shouted into the sun, but no one answered. He started panicking and choking, feeling no moisture coming.

TLC – Art Class

“Welcome to the first lesson of your second term! Starting today, my instructions will require a great deal more of you”, the professor said haughtily. I need to see that you are gratified by your privilege to be in my class. Your assignment this morning is to present the flavor of this subject matter using pastels.

Cyranny’s 1MinFic

Come in, come in, but watch your step
We’ve started our Halloween prep
Buried a few and some skulls you can see
And be especially careful under that tree
There might be a broom or two up there waiting
It’s the younger witches I am baiting
But if you’re careful you can go back to the street
With a bagful of my spooky treats.

One Book More

***

In the small mountain town of Amorea, it’s stretching toward autumn of 1954. The memories of a world at war are fading in the face of a prosperous future. Doors are left unlocked at night, and neighbors are always there to give each other a helping hand.

The people here know certain things as fact: Amorea is the best little town there is. The only good Commie is a dead Commie. The Women’s Club of Amorea runs the town with an immaculately gloved fist.

I listened to this on Audible and as most of TJ Klune’s books, couldn’t put it down 😀
