P for Pegasus, one of the best mythical creatures! He’s a winged divine stallion, usually depicted as pure white in color, in Greek mythology. He was sired by Poseidon, who presided over the sea, storms, earthquakes and horses. Greco Roman poets wrote about his ascent to heaven after his birth and his obeisance to Zeus, king of the gods, and instructed him to bring lightning and thunder from Olympus.
Story behind Smoke on the Water:
When Frank Zappa and The Mothers took to the stage they began to perform their irreverent and intellectual music. Playful and poised, the set was a magical ride until the moment a deranged fan moved through the crowd and fired a flare gun at the band.
The venue’s heating system then exploded, starting a fire which would sadly leave several fans injured, the band’s equipment destroyed, and the venue in smouldering ruins. Though the injuries suffered by fans were tragic, it could have been so much worse. Yet it also saw the birth of one of the most famous songs ever written, Deep Purple’s ‘Smoke on the Water’. The group were in Montreux ready to record their new album at the venue when the horrific events occurred.

Like an old padlock, rusty and dirty from disuse, my heart hangs about useless in a body that used to be as vibrant and new like the shiny steel fence. The fence it locked had put up with a lot of use and remained steady and strong for seventy years. It endured and provided protection its entire life. The lock was added when the fence was cut and a gate installed. Only one person had a key to the lock and after his time was up the lock was never opened again. So here it sits, worn, encasing new life and possibly a new key will come to open it and it will live again.

O for Ogres. Ogres are featured in folktales from all around the world, and though the word is of French origin, the creature itself is derived from the man-eating ancient Etruscan god Orcus. You might know ogres from Shrek, but Shrek is not your typical ogre. Ogres are usually large, tall, and strong with plenty of hair and a huge appetite. They are depicted as either dull and dim-witted.

N for nguruvilu originating from the ethnic religion of the Mapuche, found in Chile. It is a river-dwelling creature and looks much like a strange fox, with a long body, similar to a snake, and a long tail with fingernails that it uses like claws. It’s a dangerous water-being beast and the cause of dangerous whirlpools which kill people who try to cross rivers. The creatures make the water shallow on either ford, to encourage people to try to cross it making it seem safe. However, the only safe way of crossing a river with a nguruvilu is by boat.
