SoCS 11-11-23

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “create.” Use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!

On this Veteran’s day while we remember those who fought for their country, their family and their fellow soldiers, let us think on what we as a people, can do to stop war.

“If, as they often say in politics, demographics is destiny, the social, economic and political power of veterans is about to fall off a cliff.

This population drop is now compounded by a lack of national focus on the military and veterans. At least 45 US service members have recently been wounded in at least 38 separate attacks by Iran-backed forces targeting American troops in Iraq and Syria. Most Americans haven’t even noticed.

The attention of the world is now focused on global conflicts in Ukraine and Israel – and America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan feel long gone. The unfortunate reality that veterans understand is that the overall power and importance of Veterans Day is fading fast.”

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS Nov. 11, 2023

Seatmates

The bustle of the train station caused a fever of jostling and pushing as every person wanted to be first in a seat of their choice. It was a test of how far they would go in their emphatic quest to be in front of everyone else.

Once settled in a seat with bags planted on either side to indicate she wanted to be alone, Madam Blithewhite pulled her large hat further down on her head.

The sudden odor of a disgustingly smokey cigar hit her nostrils. There was nothing to be done except sit where she was, ignoring the man sitting across from her. The scene reminded her of her husband’s rudeness with his deplorable menthol cigarettes.

She retrieved two handkerchiefs from her purse and put them up to her nose, hopefully making a point. The man chuckled and blew out a larger breath.

Sammiscribbles Weekend Writing Prompt

Snow kept falling, and even his furry face from lack of shaving couldn’t keep his cheeks warm. It was an enormous effort to swallow the bit left in the canteen. Eating the last of the jerky nights ago took over an hour for his jaws working hard and slow, biting the dried meat. He thought back to why he had taken this path, no longer visible under wafts of white. He knew he would die here, deserved it, arrogant in his choice. Taking out a pencil, he scribed an apology to family, and drifted into the waiting iciness.

That’s it.

Finally, she thought, I can get some help! She reached into her pocket and felt for coins to use the phone. Her blood soaked fingers slid into the cloth to feel nothing. I’ll just dial 911 she thought again, or was it 999 here? I’ll try both. Surely someone would answer. As her other hand tightened her grip on Joe’s collar, she was exhausted because hauling him from the accident had been grueling. A vacation trip that should have been pleasant countryside fun was now a nightmare. Joe tried to speak as blood was drying around his lips and words came out garbled. Something like “put me down” he tried to say. She would never leave him and even though she could see buildings a ways ahead, didn’t know if she could make it even to the phone booth. She sat down by him and wiped more blood from the gaping wound in his chest. Her entire clothing was now soaked from when she first tried to carry him from the car. Now she had to summon more strength and reach the red booth. She dialed 999 and it answered. “I need an ambulance, I think my husband may be dying! Yes, a car ran us off the road and he’s badly injured!”

Told You so

The thin person in the front of the line wedged through the open cave entrance and Joe and I were about tenth in line. It would be an incredible thrill to actually stand under the beautiful stalactites we had seen in the latest copy of National Geographic. Realizing how small the entrance was, I told Joe we better not try to go in that way. There was an exit to the cave we could go into further along the trail. Joe was insulted I intimated he was fat, and when our turn came to enter, he tried to push through. Embarrassingly he was now stuck. We held up the other now disgruntled tour members and waited for the firefighters to extricate Joe.
