Haibun Monday 4/22/24: Earth Day
The sky, the moon, the sea, are all on the outskirts of my dream. Sleepy stories in wispy ancient books draw my attention, but I won’t make new foot prints in these environments. I draw a sketch, showing a sliver of each to fill cracks in my hopefulness. Because it is a dream to think that the sea will last forever, and even as the moon still shines in the sky, the earth below will suffer our carelessness.

There was no way he was doing it. And that was that…and he put his foot down, hard! That was before he looked where he was putting his foot, but soon realized, as the odiferous dog leavings made their presence known. It was typical Tom behavior, and no one seemed surprised. Their friends started leaving quickly and when they were all gone, his wife said, “well that’s another fine mess you’ve gotten me into”, quoting Hardy of the Laurel and Hardy comedy team. Tom sidled off to the grassy lawn and tried to clean his shoe. All the while his wife was smiling triumphantly.

Three policemen, each with his own motives and obsessions, tackle the corruption surrounding an unsolved murder at a downtown Los Angeles coffee shop in the early 1950s. Detective Lieutenant Exley (Guy Pearce), the son of a murdered detective, is out to avenge his father’s killing. The ex-partner of Officer White (Russell Crowe), implicated in a scandal rooted out by Exley, was one of the victims. Sergeant Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) feeds classified information to a tabloid magnate (Danny DeVito).

I’m usually a regular kind of fellow
Leading an ordinary life, I’m pretty mellow
Then things happened and my body said whoa!
You think you’re in charge but the answer is no
I sat long and complained for days in a row

I think providing lethal aid to Ukraine right now is critically important. I really do. I really do believe the intel and the briefings that we’ve gotten. I believe Xi, Vladimir Putin and Iran really are an axis of evil. I think they’re in coordination on it.
So I think that Vladimir Putin would continue to march through Europe if he were allowed. I think he might go to the Balkans next. I think he might have a showdown with Poland or one of our NATO allies.
To put it bluntly, I would rather send bullets to Ukraine than American boys. My son is going to begin in the Naval Academy this fall. This is a live-fire exercise for me as it is so many American families. This is not a game, this is not a joke.”
