Fandango’s Flashback Friday

What makes traditional Mexican fare worthy of such a distinction? You won’t find cumin soaked ground beef, hard shell tacos topped with iceberg and cheddar. But, you will find lamb barbacoa that has been smoked underground in banana leaves or carnitas topped with queso fresco, pickled onions and homemade salsa verde wrapped in a warm homemade corn tortilla that has been ever so lightly heated on a comal. And Puebla, just so happens to be considered by many, including Rick Bayless and Mark Bittman, as the gastronomic capital of Mexico.

Fandango’s Flashback Friday — May 10th

The Unicorn Challenge

High and low he looked for the key
The one to open his destiny
At least that was they thought
After him being taught
All of his life
By his dad and dad’s wife
“Just find the key,
That’s all you need”
So Joe started looking
Not sure how to proceed
Was it in the attic or basement cold?
Or were they trying to keep him sold
On the fact his inheritance was hidden
Or were they making it forbidden?
They had married on a whim
Never ever consulting him
Joe thought again about his fate
Why had they told of the money so late
He wondered true
That he’d been a fool
For the key he was sent
For money already spent.
Joe watched as they sailed goodbye
Then turned to a locksmith who worked on the sly
Half of the fortune he might have shared
Lay dormant in his safe, undeclared.

A serious love, by power poisoned

A crown of snakes is now poised on

Unrequited love determined this human’s fate

Poseidon, satisfied, a devil’s rake

Medusa suffered the consequence

Hoping his real love would commence

The god of the sea sadly used her

Jealous Athena then abused her

Now a crown of snakes sits on Medusa.

Gods and goddesses use powers at will

Now hear her snakes’ victims’ cries stilled

A sad story, but only a myth

No gods’ actions require pith.

Fandango’s Story Starter

This week’s Story Starter teaser is:

She held out her arms to hug me, but I knew this wasn’t my house — and she definitely wasn’t my wife. It was the skin color which was a turn on I admit, but purple has always been my favorite color. Then having six arms was a bit daunting, but hey, those six arms started holding me in interesting places… “Uh, who are you and where is my wife?”

“Right here darling. I went to the new spa on tenth street and got a makeover. It’s the latest thing in this new town on this planet, Valentina. Do you like it?” Then his wife started caressing him with those lovely purple arms and he thought, all is well that ends well.

Fandango’s Story Starter #148

Hey Jude

“Will you stop singing that song? Just because it’s my name, and rhymes with Dude, look at us! We’re dying here, and when the next big wind comes up we’re gone! Save me the “we need to go propagate to save our species speech…people hate us, try to dig us up and even poison us!”

Dude just keeps humming the song, then says, “think of all the little yellow blooms we’ll make”, trying to ease Jude’s mind. Dude sees a few bushes nearby starting to move in the breeze. He knows the end is coming and starts singing louder.

Thank you to Dan for permission to use his photo.
