FDDA#7

I found this lockdown a great inspiration to do tiresome tasks. I cleaned my junk drawer this week, and in a small apartment, luckily I only have one. In my old home in Colorado I had a few junk drawers with everything contained “just in case I needed it”. Items included: cookie cutters, pliers, odd Tupperware lids, nails, plastic tops from missing bottles, hammers, scissors, pens, pencils, art erasers, canning jar seals, rubber bands, paper clips, rulers, broken pieces of a favorite figurine–only a few of the necessary items, since the drawers in that kitchen were huge and deep. Of course finding anything I might actually need is a different story.

Fandango’s Friday Flashback – 2017

MLMM First Line Friday 8-7-17

Dinah worked whatever job paid the rent, careers were reserved for kids from the suburbs. That didn’t stop her from dreaming.

Every kid knew their future in this neighborhood. Do the job your father, mother, or uncle did, or stay in the family’s small business. Dinah was stuck in her folks’ pizza restaurant. They depended on her. She did everything and anything that was needed, from mopping floors to making sure the books were straight.

It wasn’t a bad life, it just wasn’t her dream. She wanted better for herself, a chance to be better than her parents. As she cleaned out the ovens that night she thought about the story of Cinderella. Such an impossible fairytale, she thought. As if Prince Charming would stop in to order pizza! She laughed thinking of it, and finished cleaning the oven.

She was closing up when a seemingly desperate man knocked on the door. “We’re closed”, she said irritatingly. It was after midnight and she was tired and only wanting her bed right then. The man knocked persistently. “I said we’re closed!” She couldn’t believe he was still knocking rudely.

“Please, just open for me this once. I’m desperate, it’s my sister! Please!” Dinah looked again and saw he really seemed to need help.

“What’s wrong?”

“My sister needs help and my cell died. Can I use your phone?” Dinah decided to let him in long enough to use the restaurant phone. “Oh, thank you! I am so worried about her and need to call for medical help…” He talked to the 911 operator and then left, going back to his car. Apparently his sister had a seizure of some kind. The EMTs came right away and that was the last she heard of either of them.

On her way to work Monday morning, she stopped by for her usual coffee and dragged herself into the restaurant for another work day. As she donned her apron and sat down to drink her coffee, there was a knock on the door. “God, who wants pizza at seven in the morning?” The restaurant hours were prominently displayed on the door. Again irritated, she went to the door. “We’re closed” and pointed to the hours sign.

As she was about to turn around and finish her coffee, she realized she recognized this man. He was holding the biggest bouquet of flowers she’d ever seen. He pointed to the bouquet, saying, “wait, please, these are for you!”

Thus begins the story of Dinah’s dreams coming true.

Fandango’s Friday Flashback — August 7

50 Word Thursday

***

Agatha always thought that passing by on her morning walks. She used to envy people who lived here until she knew the truth.
As any other home and family, they had secrets—now out in the open.
Keep your lavender garden hedges, stay inside hidden. I am free, and you’re not!

What day is it Anyway?

Well I’ll tell you

It’s no secret

Twitter and FB

Threw out some litter

Seems even they have rules.

Bomb blasts, hurricanes destroying

President’s thumbing always annoying

TV and streaming endlessly boring

Walls in my rooms seem cloying

While COVID number deaths are buoying.

Kids going back to school is shocking

Less and less old people rocking

On all doors disease is knocking

When people still won’t be locked in.

While all of this is ongoing

I am sheltered and it’s showing

Mostly clouds, no sun glowing

August passing without knowing

If and when a cure

Will appear for sure.

A peaceful scene. If only it was known what really happens when the tower tolls in the midnight hours. Local legends have it the tower glows and eerie bells ring out the doom of the visitor. Enticing and quiet, it appears in the sunlight, alluring wayward travelers to its streets. Later, in darkness, ominous figures pour out of doorways, up from sewer drains and down from the trees. Yes, you only come to this serene vista once in your lifetime.

Word of the Day: Dream (from 2016)

“To die, to sleep – to sleep, perchance to dream – ay, there’s the rub, for in this sleep of death what dreams may come…” (Hamlet)

To die, to sleep, perchance to dream? All I want is to sleep! One night, no dreams, no thoughts running through my head.

To die? Well I’m not that desperate yet. As a matter of fact I did die once, and before you ask, no, niet, nada. Not a light, not an angel, no pearly gates, nothing. I didn’t even know I actually “passed on” till I read the doctor’s report of my death. Talk about an eyeopener, literally! A second time I thought I was dying and so did everyone else in the room, doctors and nurses included. That was scary, because I realized what was happening.

This week while family gathered, we were joking around, speaking about the ages of different ones. I mentioned something about I’ll be dead before then, and my daughter pipes up, “weren’t you dead already, a couple of times? You’ll outlive all of us!” We all laughed, and I said, “Oh, my, God help us all!” And I meant it. I’m already getting what I describe as crotchety, proven today by losing patience with my 13 year old grandson. He’s emulating the “drive you nuts, but I’m lovable” style of his older brother. He and his older sister were here to wrap presents and the day before was horribly busy and tiring. Having only two hours sleep, I was not my usually grandma persona. And they don’t believe me if I say that’s enough, I’m serious! Because I’m not usually serious. And they can make me smile even if I’m mad. Does that make me a pushover?

Back to the sleep. After today’s wrapping half the day and entertaining the ten year old tonight, I’m tired. Why can’t I sleep? It’s 5:22 AM. I’m writing this because sleep just won’t come. Hamlet had it easy.
