MLMM Wordle #268

***

Pulling up part of his sleeves and applying a garter to hug the cloth from slipping down, Jack thought he was ready. The axe was sharpened, the lounge clear of unnecessary furniture and any splinter of autumn was removed. He wanted the hedonistic adventure of being the first of his family to cut down and set up a real Christmas tree for his new home. The fake foil and plastic trees in bright Crayola colors were in the past; plus, this was the first home he, his wife and children actually owned.

Jack was looking forward to adding cohesion to his family by starting a new tradition. As his family stepped outside their cabin, the flight of a single snow flurry felt like a blessing on his endeavor.

Fandango’s Friday Flashback

MLMM Tale Weaver 149 – Grandparents

🕷🕷🕷

I was a lucky child to have both sets of grandparents living with us. I use lucky as a relevant term applied from a child’s point of view. The toll of caring for them in illness purposed on my mother was great, but I think generally we all were grateful having them close.

My sister and I had great respect for our grandparents; however, we were sometimes mischievous in our actions. The attic in our old farmhouse was huge, covering the attached apartment where my dad’s parents lived. We played in the attic probably every day. It was filled with everything to enhance a child’s imagination. One day we were moving things around and discovered a tiny hole in the attic floor, revealing our grandparents’ kitchen below. Being the “adventurous” girls we were, we decided to play a trick on them. We made a spider out of something and attached a long string. When Grammie walked into the kitchen we suddenly dropped the spider through the hole, in front of her. The rational thoughts of scaring an old, feeble woman to cause harm, never occurred to us as we lay there on the attic floor laughing.

The laughing stopped as we were discovered by our mother.

🕷🕷🕷

**I tried to find a spider drawing to add above, but since I have a phobia about spiders, I couldn’t spend a lot of time looking for the right one. The less frightening emojis will have to do.

“Breaker breaker”

Joe sat perched on a wooden stool next to the window. The blinds were only slightly opened and the room was dark. He had one hand on his cel and one on his walkie-talkie. He was steeled for his shift on the neighborhood watch. Joe was beginning to regret making that chili with extra jalapeños for dinner.

The neighborhood was in a part of town that had too many bars, and jobless hooligans. Joe and a few other hearty eaters decided to form their own group of vigils. This night Joe’s shift was midnight to four, not usually a problem for him, he rarely slept anymore. Being jobless himself, he spent mornings looking for employment and afternoons watching Fox news.

Joe was thinking he might sneak away to use the bathroom when he heard some man yell, “what the hell’s going on in there?” The voice was deep and angry and Joe didn’t recognize it. He pushed the send button on the talkie to raise Frank who lived two doors down.

“Frank, come in, Frank! Something’s going on but I don’t see anyone.”

“Got you, Joe. There’s been a truck just idling between houses in the middle of the street. I’ve been watching it but can’t see in the tinted windows. I can’t see who’s inside, but it’s just sitting there, engine running.”

“Think we should check it out?” Hoping the answer was “negative”, Joe was suddenly blinded by bright headlights. The truck must have spotted him looking through the blinds. Joe lost his balance on the stool and dropped his cel and the walkie-talkie. The room was full of light and he panicked. He felt around for the cel, already on 911 speed dial, but it must have slid under the couch. He could hear the truck engine revving up its engine repeatedly.

From across the room, Frank’s voice was shrill, “Joe, Joe, what’s happening? I saw the truck drive up on your lawn! Are you okay? Should I call 911? Joe?”

Joe’s eyes finally adjusted to the truck lights and he found his cel. He pushed the speed dial and heard a busy signal. The truck seemed to get louder and now he had evidence he should not have eaten that chili.

“Frank! Call 911!”

The busy signal continued because Frank was on their line explaining Joe needed help. Flashing lights finally appeared but Frank and Joe were told to remain in their homes. The man in the truck explained he was just waiting for a friend but was arrested for loitering and reckless endangerment. Later, the police found his “friend” had tried to break in to a house behind Joe’s.

Feeling success in their efforts, the two men rewarded themselves with a small pizza and beer party at the nearest establishment.

I need fresh air🤯

“I think we should use the leverage we have to fight against what are illegal, unconstitutional and abusive mandates,” said Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

I guess burning books and taking away women’s rights, mocking the President, taking vacations while his state is having a crisis, mocking BigBird for vaccination promo, and promoting false election fraud and financing Boebert is more his style.

Chill Out

I just made the third call in a week to my electric/gas provider, switching cut off and turn on dates and times. 🙄 I must say they do not put you on hold, the people who answer the phone are extremely polite, and helpful.

What an unusual occurrence these days—helpful, polite, respectful; plus the bonus of no annoying hold music that was composed by a computer—must have been written by a computer🧐🥸

As of 5pm today, I am staying in my current apartment till December 30th, boxes and all. Well, at least so far as of 5:15pm, it’s the plan. The upside is everyone is back to work, no longer sick and our family Thanksgiving dinner is planned for Saturday.

I think Murphy might be behind all this? Whatever, I’m trying to chill like Joe cool😬
