Melissa’s Fandango Flash Fiction Challenge #238

Autumn enters bright and bold
Warmest colors fight the cold
While curling leaves begin to fold
And harvest moons turn to gold
Pumpkins rest, waiting to be honed
Lattes spiced with aromatic cloves
Lawns crunchy with leaf droves
And dreading the too soon snows.

each tock of my watch
brings thrills to my waiting heart
my heart sounds a click

Joe had gained a lot of weight and now he was just cumbersome. He had never been an athlete of any kind and now sitting in an office chair all day did not help. Every nibble seemed to strike a new mound on his already uncontoured shape. He seemed destined to just be in his office and vegetate while rumors flew as to “the bigwig fulfilled his name”. Joe resigned himself to their cruelty and opened the donut box again.

After watching The King perform, Bruce Springsteen wrote the song and sent it to none other than Elvis Presley. Springsteen recalls the event, “I sent [Elvis] a demo of it but he died before it arrived.”

Temps outside freezing
Inside we’re sneezing
Old ones are wheezing
It’s the colder season

Leaves are drifting
Clouds not lifting
Fog is sitting
Get out the knitting

Season turns colder
Aching bones feel older
Squirrels getting bolder
Fireplace smolders

Halloween hovering
Christmas is shoving
Since July it’s been coming
Stores already humming

Seasons no more
Based on nature’s core
Rushed monthly scores
Commercialized galore.

“Holiday creep is real. Halloween costumes fill store shelves in August, pumpkin-flavored everything is on the menu by Labor Day, and Christmas gifts and decor are everywhere a month before Thanksgiving. It often feels like too much, too soon.” http://www.nytimes.com

Being an efficient person, (I prefer that adjective to the more critical—“you might have OCD”), I rarely do anything one at a time, and usually it is a combination of tasks. Over the years it has become a habit and as I sit here writing this I am drinking coffee, which doesn’t seem like much of a challenge, but I am also clumsy. Listening to audio books I either play an online game or do jigsaw puzzles. If I’m going from one room to another I always make sure I carry everything I might need or need to place somewhere else—just thinking maybe that’s why I seem clumsy? That probably makes no sense, but the sentence seemed efficient to me. My sense of humor prevents me from being overly critical…of myself.
