The Haunted Wordsmith – 12-5-18

stand-up mixer, stand-up comedian, stand-up guy

He’d always been known to be a standup guy, you know the kind. The ones who are never late to work, always home for dinner, plays with the kids so you can have five minutes of peace? Yup, Stan was your man. In fact he was more than just a great guy to have around, he was almost impeccable! Hard to believe, eh?

Last Saturday morning I went over and knocked on Stan’s door. He yelled, “come on in, Ollie, grab a seat! I’m just finishing up these cookies for the PTA meeting today.”

I curiously watched as Stan deftly manipulated the standup mixer on the kitchen shelf. He then took a rubber spatula out of the crock holding such items and neatly removed the batter from the beaters.

“I thought you might have time for coffee down at the diner, Stan. But if you’re busy we can go another time.”

“That’s okay, Ollie. I can squeeze it in. I’m just going to let this dough chill a bit anyway. If we get back before lunch I can have hot fresh cookies done just in time for the meeting. Then I have approximately two hours between seven and nine tonight before I’m performing at Club Hardy.”

I was amazed. How Stan could be a husband, father, perfect employee, baker and standup comedian. . .well it was just amazing that’s all. I had heard Stan do his routine and it was very funny and I tried to see the act as often as I could.

Stan and Ollie had their coffee break, and walked back to their homes. Stan entered his home and stopped in to hang up his coat as he did every time he took it off, and retired to his home office. As he sat down at his desk, he unlocked the secret drawer with a high tech electronic code. Opened, he placed his right thumb on the device and charged himself up for another week.

Sammiscribbles Weekend Writing Prompt #83

Rushing in, you surround me

Liquid folds envelop my body

Your words mumble in my ear

Words I love to hear

Of love and desire

Of need and want

The waves crest and ebb

As we explore our passion

Dipping in, going fully under

Coming up for air

This is love, this is fulfillment

We’ve breached the breakwater.

“Is it better to know or is it better to not know?”

Of course I’m no philosopher, never took a class on it, but I know my answer. It is always better to know. I’ve written about it here on my blog so it’s no surprise. Especially, I’m referring to medical diagnoses. I’ve had a few medical problems, two of them cancer. My first encounter with an oncologist in 1995, I wanted to know everything and she responded with, well let’s just wait and see how the operation goes. I told her I wanted to know everything then, the best and the worst scenarios, so I could plan.

Twenty years later I had another cancer diagnosis and that doctor was also reluctant. After a few tests determined my outcome, I was scheduled for surgery. They said we’ll see how it goes and then determine treatment. I insisted on a PET scan before surgery so I would know how much of me would be removed and how much was still okay. Luckily the test showed I could have the surgery and be “cured”. Of course once you have cancer you’re never cured, you’re never sure when it will come back somewhere else. It’s just one of those facts you have to put in the background to lead a normal life, if that’s possible.

Doctors come in lots of varieties. My advice I repeat: be your own health advocate. Doctors used to be revered, and some think they deserve to be revered still, and some do, but now you need to be wary. Get a second opinion. Ask questions, do your own research–because you should always want to know. Don’t let fear of the unknown keep you from checking yourself out or asking for help. You need to know.

It’s that time of year again

This isn’t the first time I’ve gotten this crap. If you don’t know the sender, just delete. If you respond you’re just put on another list to receive more scams. Don’t let yourself be vulnerable.

The Haunted Wordsmith – Page 82, Line 2

From: “Sergeant of the Guard: The Road in Iraq” by Sergeant R. Morgan Crihfield.

“. . .parking from living area. I started to run back to the blast walls, then”

I realized Joe was nowhere near me. I looked back again, as smoke filled my eyes, the blasts were still sounding, and I failed to see him.

The day had started out with our usual routine, coffee, MRE, and loading up our gear for the next reconnaissance mission. The burned out villages appeared abandoned but we were always on alert. Joe and I were on point and everything seemed normal, as if anything here in this place was normal. We had our own names for these places, some version of hell. The day was just another search mission and nothing unusual was expected.

Joe and I were just opening an old wooden door when we heard something and a bomb went off. Joe shoved me and the bomb sent me flying. That’s when I lost Joe. Suddenly acrid smoke was thick and burning. It seemed to permeate our helmets and masks. I felt dizzy and tried to find Joe. My feet automatically started propelling me toward the blast wall, the barrier that might give protection. I looked over my shoulder, but the smoke was everywhere and I didn’t see Joe there.

The rest of the squad was running with me. Only Joe wasn’t with us. The final blast came and when the air cleared we ran back to the area to find Joe. We only found his broken helmet near the door. There were drag marks, but how could anything survive to pull him out? We searched the area but there was no sign of him. Helicopter surveillance was not coming. This was supposed to be a routine mission, one we’ve done every day with nothing happening. Maybe we were complacent, at least that’s what they decided in their reports.

Movie Monday

It’s feeezing ba— out here today! Good day for a movie to set a Christmas mood. I chose “Polar Express”.

“Tom Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis (“Forrest Gump”; “Cast Away”) reunite for “Polar Express,” an inspiring adventure based on the beloved children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg. When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.”

SOCS 12-1-18

Hey it’s Sunday, but better late than never…So privileged this weekend to have all of my family together except one. My sons and families were here from NJ and CO. It was wonderful having everyone together. Here’s one thing most of the group did–well I watched and it is freezing in there!

The word ma for the prompt…often called so by my daughter who lives here in WY. Affectionately of course. Sometimes it’s: mom! If I’m acting obnoxiously, just bugging her, which I love to do…life’s short, you have to make the best of it😄
