Saturday Mix – Hard of Hearing

“Who goes there?” He shouted loudly
Sitting on his steed so proudly
“Are you a king’s knight in good stead
Surely not a beggar for bread
Permission is not allowed ye.”

Serving my master devoutly
He sent me here from the foundry
Believe me, please don’t take my head.
“Who goes there?”

Sir, I approach you so cowedly
I know my look may be dowdy
I beseech you, my master said
To bring you this sword made of lead.
“I say, my hearing’s quite cloudy,
Who goes there?”

Spiritual Visit

Yes, it is broken down, old, possibly dangerous to live in, but it’s ours. Every creaking floor board, every missing shingle that let the raindrops in, all that is ours. (I’m using is and ours, because even though our love was completed in this cabin over sixty years ago, the memories of those dreams continue.)

We were young, adventurous, completely dependent on each other and our dreams of an unburdened life. To be free and self sufficient was our goal. Oh, the hopes of youth; they simply cannot be downtrodden or dismissed with actual facts. That is what is so wonderful about being young, and more importantly, completely devoted to each other and the never ending possibilities.

We met as college students, full of vim and vigor. You might say we were hippies, with our long hair, or flower children. We weren’t really accepted by the “normal” society and that was fine with us. We didn’t need their respect or want their help; we wanted peace, freedom to go our own way and everything that implies. Rules of the everyday nine to five jobs were not for us. We didn’t need “the man” and his conformity, in fact we rebelled against it.

That was the dream. We set out on our own, found this abandoned cabin and made it our home. To say we were naive would be an understatement. Having grown up with efficient parents, we had no reason to think we would be any different when it came to providing for ourselves. Our college educations did nothing to prepare us for the real world. But youth, health, strength, and determination all were on our side.

Of course our love for each other was also a great motivator, and I think that was the key to our survival. We planted gardens and soon became vegetarians, which was also a life saving device. Being those “flower children”, we didn’t want to harm the animals around us but we did learn to protect our gardens from intruders. We were blessed to have natural edible items close by and researched and learned what was safe to eat. I think this healthy way of eating also contributed to our longer life.

Well it’s time for us to move on, so we’ll be saying farewell. We’ll always be here in spirit of course. If you are hiking and stop in here for a rest, enjoy it, please. We hope you find just an inkling of the happiness we felt while (living) here.

Photo Fiction – 87

Jared gazed lovingly at the stained and rusted keys. Running his fingers over the old keys, many memories flooded his mind. He smiled to himself as he remembered the first lesson he was reluctant to attend. Of course his father insisted,  as many parents do. It was part of his father’s teachings, so Jared would be accepted by members of the family he had never met.

Growing up, Jared’s father was the black sheep relative. Nothing was expected of him as an adult but to stay away from the society of his youth. That was easy to accomplish since Brooklyn was quite a distance from their upstate mansion. Jared’s father left that area as soon as he was able, taking his savings and living in the city. He received his inheritance at twenty-one, using it to live as he pursued his love of music. Jared grew to share his father’s love and admiration of music and became a talented pianist.

Jared’s parents were not well to do, but any extra money went into lessons by the best teachers his father could find. Their plans paid off with Jared earning a scholarship to Juilliard.  Jared was incredulous to be schooled in the same conservatory as John Williams, Yo-Yo Ma, and Itzhak Perlman. The audition went well and he was accepted.

That was the beginning of Jared’s life as a concert pianist. His father’s dream came true through his son. Jared’s father sent an anonymous invitation to his parents in upstate New York for a concert.  He was beyond proud and wanted them to be surprised when they realized who was performing.

The special night came and Jared’s grandparents were there, watching in amazement as Jared performed. Their son had accomplished something after all, raising and training a beautiful pianist.

Apology With Dance

Okay, admitted I was bored.  It’s not like I don’t have things to do, but….

I was talking with a friend today about attitude, glass half full theory, etc. I read back to some of my more positive posts and realize I’ve been a real bummer lately!  I don’t know the reason, really, think it has been a long winter and missing the actual spring and all the aspects of it and being outside IN it.

So sorry if that’s the case.  Here’s a small pick me up:

Tale Weaver-119  What if Time Travel Does Exist?

What if time travel does exist?  Would you choose to go forward or back?  If you could not choose a specific date or year, would your choice be the same?

James met the love of his life in 1960.  They were partners in a research project involving time travel.  Of course the idea was unprovable then, but both he and his fiancé were fascinated by the idea.  Dr. Avery assured them it was possible and encouraged them to be accepting of his theories.  At this unfortunate time frame, the Vietnam War was calling in young men to join the armed forces.  James decided it was his duty and joined, only to be sent overseas a few weeks later, just before Christmas.

Mary continued working with Dr. Avery and tried to lose herself in his intriguing research.  Six months later they received a notice that James had been captured and killed.  These reports were not always accurate, but the saddened pair decided to throw themselves into their work to masque their grief.

In the meantime their experiments continued to be exceedingly successful.  A few animal participants survived the trials and Dr. Avery was ready to pursue the dream himself.  With the help of Mary, he completed a short day trip from the present to the following day.  When he returned, all seemed normal and they celebrated their success.

That evening as Mary mulled over the absence of her fiancé she thought she might be able to save him.  If he never joined the Army, he wouldn’t have been killed in combat.  She didn’t sleep much and decided to ask Dr, Avery if he thought it would be possible to go back and change James’s decision.

The doctor explained to Mary that if she could travel back to that exact time, there would be no guarantee that she’d be able to convince James not to go.  He also warned her she could not tell James why she was so adamant in him not joining the service.  They tried to think of a solution that would work to James’s advantage. Dr. Avery didn’t believe they could safely complete the idea.  There were too many unanswered questions that would take time, possibly years to figure out.

Mary tossed and turned for many more nights and then made her decision.  She let herself in to the laboratory while the doctor was still at home.  She prepared the apparatus for the year 1960 to join James, and climbed in.  As soon as it started, she was shaken and passed out.  When she woke she did not recognize her surroundings.  She seemed to be surrounded by a bubble-like film where she could see everything, but no one about could see her or the time machine.  She looked around and could  see small,  greenish structures, as if in a dream.  She desperately rubbed her eyes, trying to find James.  She heard a deafening shot and  suddenly realized where she was.  Vietnam, December, 1960. James’s body lay before her, she was too late.
