SYW 11-14-22

1. Does the weather affect your mood? Yes. If it’s sunny I’m happier and cloudy or dark I keep to myself.

2. If a stranger smiles at you or says ‘good morning’ when they pass you in the street, do you return it? Always and I even initiate it.

3. If you had a choice of just one of these things to eat, what would it be and why?
Chocolate, a sweet pastry, a plate of chips/fries (this is not a forever choice, just one instance). I’d choose probably fries 🙄

4. If you could go back to when you were a specific age, what would that be? Why? Don’t think I would, unless maybe thirty before my mom died.

Gratitude: You know my answer—family. Surprise calls asking: are you decent and my answer: never, before they come knocking 😂

Garden Show

Just like clockwork, the head garden club fairy looked sideways at my peppermint camellias. Her lack of charm powered over me. Mingling among the chummy chaos of my regular admirers who looked like mice admiring the latest soft cheese, she chose juxtaposition, putting herself between them and me. The rest of the crowd oohing and ahhing at my offerings decided to give her a wide berth when her glowering look called dibs over their presence. Once again her interference and influence caused me to lose the trophy and shatter my efforts.

The invitation wasn’t there. It was not an unusual or peculiar event; the spaces allotted were few for people who looked like her, but she had faith. It just seemed sometimes faith wasn’t enough. At those times it was the thunder of blood in her heart that beat the loudest, when the disappointment and anger tried to take over. So far in her life she could keep it under control, stopped and remembered to keep the faith she grew up with.

Fandango’s Flash Fiction Challenge

She knew this was probably going to happen, but she let herself be stupid, again. Sure, he was attractive, sexy and his choice of automobile was alluring, but sitting here alone waiting? Did she need a neon sign saying he was a two timer or was waiting outside a motel room just a coincidence? What are the odds? She looked back to see if there was a taxi nearby, but none to be found. I’ll just wait till he comes out smelling like cheap perfume after he was inside “checking on his sister” staying there…yeah, sure I will. She grabbed her purse and walked to the motel office and called for a taxi.

2022 November PAD Chapbook Challenge 14

Prompt: Take the phrase ‘[blank] Story’ (e.g. Tall Story) to create a title then write a poem for it.

Strange Story

a gathering of women

none were witches, they assured

trying to reach her loved one

an innocent was lured

a seance, she inquired, I don’t believe in them

but as she sat around the table

something started tugging on her hem

candles flickered on and off, medium weaved—a moaning sound

and then she heard familiar barks of her favorite bloodhound.

“Shake it off, Joe. Your choice of style is not as legendary as the wordy wonder but we all enjoy it!”

Joe exhaled a long breath. He decided it was no longer time to pretend he had true writing talent on the chance he might have a “great American novel” breakthrough. He had to make a change because this dream had failed.

His friend Mike took Joe on one of many recuperative walks they would enjoy while Joe was deciding what could be next in his future.

Real Estate Ripoff

“I’m trying to be diplomatic here, pal, but there’s no way you expect it to be squeaky clean without insects and the occasional rat. You think this is bad, at least you’re not homeless!”

“But I thought with my city hall connections I could move into a nicer place, after all this is supposed to be Heavenly Heights! It’s sure not living up to the brochure!”

2022 November PAD Chapbook Challenge 13

Prompt: Write an ekphrastic poem.

The Flower Carrier (1935) by Diego Rivera symbolizes the lifestyles of the Mexican working class and the hardships inherent in earning wages, specifically the flower vendors, which Rivera depicted in several of his paintings.
Diego Rivera

delightful fragrant beauty

is a heavy burden carried to market

daily struggles depicted in oil are

reminders of poor men’s dilemma

supporting a family and

how much we the privileged take for granted.
