MLMM Saturday Mix

The ‘Double Take’ challenge focuses on the use of homophones* to build your writing piece. You have two sets of homophones and you are challenged to use all of them in your response – which can be poetry or prose.

Our homophone sets this week are:

cession – giving up

session – a group sitting

and

creak – to squeak

creek – small stream

***

The cession of fresh water creeks was on the docket at the town meeting. Climate change had caused sessions of local amphibian creatures to disappear at an alarming rate. One avid herpetologist was so upset his voice started to creak as he showed photos of the different species of frogs that had disappeared altogether.

Sammiscribbles Weekend Writing Prompt

The Mermaid

She loved string bikinis even though they showed too much
according to her boyfriend, they didn’t show enough
she came to him a thalassic beauty, completely unadorned
and that’s how he preferred to see her bodily form—
after he got past the shock of lack of legs, obviously the “norm”.

2022 November PAD Chapbook Challenge 12

Prompt: write a future poem.

A Dream

A probably-not-going-to-happen idea

That everyone realizes they live in fear

Of the differences between us all

Their love of the sameness is at fault

How boring to see only one tree of green

Or one red rose is all you could see

No colorful sunsets, soft yellow only

Wouldn’t you consider it sad, even lonely?

Instead, let us hope for a better future

Where all colorful differences are nurtured.

Their Way and Then the Highway – Rant

My daughter, her daughter and her soccer daughter all headed out early yesterday morning to drive to Boise, Idaho for the WY state soccer club games. Players from Alaska also were traveling to play.

About 3/4 of the way up to Boise from home the games were called off by the city of Boise because of snow on the field….okay, anyone who actually lives in areas that have snow and ask players to come from long distances to play should have been prepared with an alternate site, cleaned off the fields or at least found an inside arena to use.

Instead, dollars spent on gas and plane tickets are wasted with no recompense from Boise.

Now if this had been a football game I ask you, what do you think would have been done? Now my family group spent the night in a motel and are on their way home driving hours again. The hope of meeting new friends from Alaska and Idaho squashed.

I am not even in the car and I am mad…Boise, Idaho? Really? No preparation? And when I checked out the weather it said no snow for today and not until possibly Thursday this week. What a bunch of wimpy city officials!

2022 November PAD Chapbook Challenge

Write a scary poem.

Creaking hinges start the chill

Surely it’s no one thinking ill

Or thoughts of vicious harm

Surely no cause to be alarmed

But then a louder noise is heard

My bedroom door opens a third

Coming around the wooden frame

A vision of Hitchcock fame

Birds, and birds, too many to count

They flutter in, a huge amount

Swooping down in malevolent acts

I try to hide under quilted wraps

They land and peck and tear the toile

I’m helpless under the thin veil

I start to scream to anyone near

They don’t come hearing my fear

There seems to be no escape

As my body shivers and shakes

The black ravens win the night

I lay there dead, a bloody sight.

Fandangos Friday Flashback

SoCS Veterans Day 2017

I’m not sure how to incorporate “arm” into my post this morning.  My first thought for some peculiar reason is “the long arm of the law”.  I’ll just leave it there because I don’t have any idea why I’m thinking that….But I have good, happy news, so if you’re still reading…you know I love movies.

My two grandsons and I splurged on the new ARQ theater here and saw “Thor Ragnarok” last night.  It was fun!  I had wanted to see it for a while.  It is unlike the other Thor and Avengers movies, but it takes the humor from those and pumps it up big time, and has references and puns about them.  It’s like watching a comic book in action.  If you see it, tell me if you got the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory bit.

My favorite character besides Thor of course, is Korg, played by Taika Waititi, the director of TR. I tried to Google how many people it took to make this movie with no luck. The credits are long but you need to watch them. I can’t imagine there is a Visual Arts company not listed. I recommend this movie for a fun get out of yourself laugh adventure.
