The violin playing complimented the gothic atmosphere, but Carla was still squeamish after knowing it was not a real person, but a lifelike mannequin. Going to medieval fairs was John’s idea who seemed to revel in torture device displays. Carla felt increasingly frightened as if she were walking a tightrope with John.
