It must have been pretty cramped in those towers if they did have to use them in earnest. For a start the only door was high up and you had to pull the ladder up and in after you and who knows how many monks would need to take shelter – so your poem captures the feeling around the towers very well Cheryl…
Love that you used this photo! It was taken at Glendalough in Ireland…the ruins (and there are many, as well as an ancient cemetery) of an old Christian monastic settlement founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century. It is a beautiful place to visit! I deliberately didn’t tell where the photo was from. When I see this photo, I see definitely the possibility of prisoners and enemies invading. So few words you’ve used here, but they do indeed tell a story and feelings for and from the photo.
Close to home methinks, an abstraction of real life.
