Shuffling in line to the sound of chains
Dignity no longer remains
The line shifts with each step
Familiar cadence with sideways rep
Each man jostled by sticks with jolts
Iron doors are closed by bolts
A daily trip to the yard
Never scrivened by a bard
Tiring routines are the norm
No expectations form
Do the crime and
You do the time
Singsong words by judging men
Some innocents remember when
They thought their truth would win
Now they too are shufflin’.

Nicely done, if a bit of a downer. The Criminal Justice System is anything but just.

A powerful piece. The last few lines sum up the fallibility of the jury system where so often it’s the most persuasive lawyer that wins, rightly or wrongly so.
