She joined the others. Feeling there was no choice, she fell in line behind the taller ones. They promised a modicum of safety, however small. The crossing would be dangerous but she had nothing to lose, not with the way the world was now.
Suzanne tried to stay with her family, but it was too much. She was exhausted from caring for them and all hope of their recovery ended today.
As she entered the freezing water, her legs were increasingly numb as she trudged on. After sleeping with unsettling nightmares, even this journey to the unknown would be welcome.
