“Round and round, up and down,”. Chubby Checker and Joey Dee and the Starlighters were dancing and singing these words in “Peppermint Twist”. I liked that song, danced to it, not really knowing it was only a metaphor of the roller coaster road of life.

We all lead these lives, if we really live at all. You struggle, anticipate when to reach the top, not realizing once you’re there, it lasts only a few seconds before you plunge down uncontrollably. Do we ever have control, or as some people believe, life is ordained, set in stone already when you’re born?

Your path will be shown to you, another belief. Numerology believes in dates of your birth, palm readers look at lines in your hand, seekers of truth on mountain tops want you to look inside yourself for your truth. Who really knows when the roller coaster will end, or how many twists and turns will take you to the edge only to be relieved at the calm plane once again?

I think no one, no belief can tell you. You just have to sit under the bar, pull it down hard and hold on for dear life. Because life, no matter how wild, is dear.
