The town hall was decorated with shiny varnish on the paneled walls. The heavy gold curtains reflected the varnish, illuminating the stage area. It was an attempt to disguise the lack of actual proper lighting. The town had a small budget but liked to appear as if the local theater group was a priority. Some members of the town council tried to expel the Arts category in the budget altogether, but groupies started a petition, ending in a protest. This was one reason the council finally gave in.
The local high school then took advantage of the town hall for graduations, concerts and plays. High school performances drew large groups from the school and of course all parents came to watch or listen to their child. Parents sewed and crafted scenery and costumes for the events. The resulting performances were heralded by even by the most jaded members of council.
I’ll give it a think

Great synonyms and a very interesting piece of writing! It would be a terrific starter for a story about a conflicted drama group putting on a famous play…
