Sad to Lose Leonard Cohen

As an old, music lover, I have below a favorite song by Leonard Cohen. When I first heard him, because I love lower and gravelly voices, I had to find out who sang “Everybody Knows”. Later on I heard “Dance me to the End of Love” (swoon). I read there are more than a hundred verses to “Hallelujah” written by Mr. Cohen. Individual singers take their pick. My favorite rendition is by Jeffrey Adam Gutt.  The first song is very relevant this week.  Whoever chooses to sing his myriad of songs, I will miss you, Mr. Cohen.

  1. I’ve never heard any cover version of any Leonard Cohen song that I have liked as much as his version. Never. But I’m a hard-core, die-hard fan. If I listen to music, it’s almost always Leonard Cohen. It’s always been that way. There’s plenty of other music I like, but if I choose something it usually has to be him. I can take my pick from almost fifty years worth.
Today I’m trying not to be too sad.

    1. When I started my blog, it was as a step towards getting published. I didn’t know I’d make friends here. Now I’ve taken another step; I’ve joined an online writers group. I hadn’t realised it would take up so much of my time. I feel guilty about temporily abandoning WP. I need to establish my place in the writer’s group, and then get a balance between my two online lives.
To put it simply: I’ll be back πŸ™‚

    2. Didn’t come out right…..I meant believe in yourself, there’s always some person who doesn’t wish you well for whatever reason. At least that’s my experience. Sorry.

  2. You calling my wife derogatory? Do you know her too? πŸ™‚
I’m male I always use the wrong words at the wrong time and it gets me in trouble but at least you took the time to call me out on it πŸ™‚

That’s not a bad version, Jeff Buckley also does a reasonable version. A band I used to work with had a song called Vallhallaujeh, it was nothing like Cohen’s song but I thought I’d mention it πŸ™‚

    1. So send the link? That was his audition tape. He improved with time. I’m sorry now that his record is mostly hard rock, which he prefers. His choice of course, but he has a beautiful voice that’s hard to hear in hard rock.

    2. Send you a link to my wife? Nah! πŸ™‚

Oh you mean the band? Can’t do that either, it was 25 years ago I worked with the band, we did some videos but very few of them are on youtube and I don’t own the rights to share what I have.

    3. And no, I’m not. I just think it’s like saying, the dog. Even then most people say my dog, not the dog. Sorry, I’m sometimes cranky and old fashioned although, I do try to fight it.πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  3. I was never a huge fan, I respected the guy for what he could do but was not a fan. However the one thing I will say that for all the covers of Hallelujah there are very few good ones and there is some downright terrible ones. From people who should never sing such a song to people who just screw it up because they can’t sing full stop. There is a version playing in the back ground at my house right now (released today by some band the wife thinks are the bees knees and can do no wrong) which fits into the category of not that good, not able to hit the right notes at the right time and not a great tribute to a guy who deserves more. It’s not terrible but I have issues with people that release covers and don’t seem to understand the importance of the song they are covering.
