She opened the box only to discover the cake was smashed in on the side. Instead of reading Happy Birthday Norma, it now read Happy Birthday Norm. Considering it was a celebration for the newly gendered woman, this called for drastic measures.
Norma, formerly Henry Adams, was a sweet person who never felt right in his body. Now turning thirty-five, he decided enough was enough and made the change. Closest friends were supportive, though vapid brained parents refused to acknowledge Norma, who was also disowned by most of the family.
Marie shut the box and ran to the bakery. Luckily they had a plain cake on hand and decorated it with the proper greeting. Norma’s happiness on this birthday was especially poignant and everything had to be perfect.

“You should think about serializing your stories, Harry!” Joe and his FBI partner were checking out the contraptions in the alley to see if there was a potential threat.
Assigned this investigation by the current president who seemed rather paranoid, they found nothing untoward. Imaginative or creative endeavors were feared and suspicious to the commander and chief who couldn’t comprehend anything beautiful outside of women, even then with different views than most self respecting people thought.
Fascinated by the spheres, and a new story, Harry joked they might be giant pods holding alien seeds.
“Now you’re sounding like the boss!”

Reading Linda’s “phew” reminded me of a family joke which came from this couple on the Oprah show in 1993. The joke goes, “baby, I’m soo tired. . .”. Here is the couple then and now. This lifestyle is what I would call an each-to-their-own arrangement. What do you think?

Pulling on the tattered robe, stoking the morning fire, checking to see if more wood needed to be brought in, another day begins. She absentmindedly reached for the teakettle and plopped two bags of morning brew into matching mugs.
Turning around, walked into the washroom and scrubbed her wrinkled face, polishing it off with a glance in the mirror, brushed her teeth, combed her graying hair and stretched.
It was just another Sunday and church was three hours away. She filled the mugs with boiled water, and carried them to the bedroom. She sat the cups on his nightstand and snuggled in beside him. He turned toward her, a warm smile breaking into his roughhewn features. She breathed it in, accustomed to his welcomed response on the chilly October morning.
