Democracy is requisite for any nation to be secure, and provide adequacy for its citizens. In the United States of America, democracy is government elected and ruled by its citizens. We vote for our government officials in elections. Elected persons should represent citizens’ ideas and concerns. In theory we govern ourselves. The tenet of a democracy is “rule by the people”. Abraham Lincoln, in his famous Gettysburg Address borrowed the phrase, “of the people, by the people and for the people” from John Wycliffe’s prologue to his translation of the Bible in 1384. I think we have failed.

I sit watching the little creatures scurry up and down the stones, only wishing I could be them, just for a moment, long enough to escape this dungeon cave. Circumstances all my own doing, landed me here in this dismal resort. “If only” repeats in my mind like an old sad song full of guilt and longing refrains of regret. I somehow, absentmindedly, chose this, my subconscious ruled for once, knowing the outcome beforehand. It won’t be long now, darkness will fill the space, almost a relief to be done with it all.
