L for Ladon. In Greek mythology Ladon was the serpent-like dragon that twisted around the tree in the Garden of the Hesperides where there were nymphs of evening and golden lights of sunset, and guarded the golden apples. The golden apples granted immortality when eaten. Heracles killed Ladon with a bow and arrow and carried the apples away. In an alternate version of the myth, Ladon is never slain, and Heracles instead gets the Titan god Atlas to retrieve the apples. At the same time, Heracles takes Atlas’ place, holding up the sky.

Inspired by Paula Light’s post on Thursday:
A piece of string walks into a bar and asks for a Beer.
The barman says: “I’m sorry we don’t serve pieces of string”.
So the piece of string walks outside, ruffles himself up, walks back into the bar and says: “Can I have a Beer please”.
The barman replies: “Aren’t you that piece of string I just asked to leave”.
To which the piece of string replies: “No, I’m a frayed knot”.

J for Jasconius. It is said to appear like an island. In the middle high german version of the Navigatio sancti brendani abbatis (Von sente Brendan) transcribed by Dr. Thomas and F. Shannon it is said to have a small forest, a beach and even a small river on its back. It lures sailors by its appearence onto its back and as soon as they ignite a fire, it dives into the sea and kills the sailors. Some believe Jasconius is the whale that swallowed Jonah, from the Bible story.
