Fandango’s Story Starter

This week’s Story Starter teaser is:

Rebecca stared at her reflection in the mirror and wondered how a country girl like her was ever going to survive the big city? He was waiting, impatient for her to make a decision. Either he would be what he’d dreamed of, a new life with the woman he loved, or a bachelor alone in a new job; he had left it up to her decision. He thought he might not survive without her. Rebecca had no idea her fears were also his.

Oh, here comes Freddy—he’s not a bad guy but a little narcissistic. What was your name again? Oh, hi Freddy, I was just talking to…oh my, she left and I never saw her walk away! So how’s your day been Freddy? Ready for the bread crumb onslaught? It’s children’s day at the park…

dVerse Poets Haibun Monday

Today, let’s reflect on this upcoming Super Blue Moon! Write a haibun that alludes a Super Blue Moon, in any way you can relate.

My first thought of course was the haunting song “Blue Moon”. History tells us that it was written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. In reality, “Blue Moon” was composed in 1931 by a 17-year-old, the son of Polish immigrants, after an evening of moonlit skating on a pond in upstate New York—East bank of the Hudson River. His name was Edward W. Roman.”

icy landscape love

blue moon of night shining clear

words of romance came

overheard and then stolen

true story comes with reward

Teatime Mystery

Bill did his usually charming manly stride into the dining room, offering his weary “afternoon ladies” to June’s guests. June’s friends thought Bill was a charmer alright and ever glad to be at June’s when he came home from work. But June had an agenda and called their attention to the trinket she had found in her attic. I think it belonged to my favorite ancestor, Great Aunt Bertie, who was a world traveler. The item was an Egyptian styled charm, presumably from Bertie’s repeated sojourns to African regions. I also think it might have some mystical power…June heard gasps from the women, now all fixedly eyeing the cameo. Bill shrugged and fixed himself a drink and settled in his den.

Jerry stood there at the butcher shop counter; absent was his wife who always made these decisions. Maybe he should just get a variety of choices and not a single meat to barbecue. Yup, I’ll go with that, thinking it was the smart thing to do. Trying not to ruminate on any repercussions that might follow, he left for home. When he arrived, his wife was pleased, Jerry thought he’d dodged a bullet, and got busy setting up the alfresco dining area. He stretched the copper colored awning over the table and set out the fresh flowers his wife had put in clear jelly jars. Then surveying the scene, found out he was satisfied all was ready. Then in came the friendly neighbor carrying badminton rackets for entertainment. Jerry was not good at it, but glad his neighbor would supply that part of the party.

The Sunday Whirl

Nonsensical humming berated her ears as the dream dragged on. In her dream state Lorna wanted to drive fast and slam into the loose dirt and skid around like a stuntman. She’d seen it a hundred times and it looked easy, as long as there were no cliffs nearby. She reached down and turned off the radio but the humming continued. Words seemed to flash in her mind, words like, drive faster, run him down, crush his bones. Who’s bones, what?Hey! she said to herself, that’s enough! I am in my bed having a nightmare, that is all!

Lorna forced herself awake and left to the kitchen to make a fresh cup of coffee. It was too early, she thought, but heard a whap on her door. Lorna opened it, bent down, reached for the newspaper and tucked it under her arm. It was only after sitting at the table, sipping coffee, that she opened it to the local headlines. In big bold newsprint she read: “Local Man Run Down and Killed by Unknown Assailant”.

…the bird…

“Well that’s certainly not to scale…is it?” Joe nervously stepped closer to the image on the large screen, “Sam, that’s not you in the picture, is it?” Sam tried not to smile and replied, “it is, Joe. I was scared to death when I realized how big it was!” Sam was playing a joke on Joe, showing a photoshopped view of himself running from a bird. Jokes in the Zoology Department were well known to all except newcomer Joe.

A Hum in the Bush

An indistinct hum mysteriously emanated near the stone where I was sitting. I had just sat down, taking a break from the pounding of the safari jeep track. “I’m getting too old for this”, I said as every ounce of my sixty year old body started to ache. The popular vacation tour was a surprise gift from his kids. Little did they all know the humming was caused by a disturbed hive of killer bees. Joe didn’t know he could run that fast!

Rory’s Questions

NASA has gifted you a newly invented experimental Invisibility Cloak. You have it for 72 hours – it’s all yours with no caveats or questions asked – how will you use it? For good or for pranking?
Give some examples of your usage. I think I might visit the upstairs neighbor to see what he’s building with all the drops and heavy bonks when he startles me.

What would you never do for low money? Ever? But if the money was high enough, what would you do? I’ve always worked for low money so used to it and have no idea what I’d do if offered high money?

How do you feel if a fly lands on your ice cream – will you discard it to the trash or continue to eat it? Throw it out.

What’s the craziest thing you could ever write about that is ultimately utterly random and abstract and not typically you or your style? Rodeos

Is there any time that a yes is a no and a no is a yes? Probably. I’m more straightforward.

You have died; what will you come back as – a brick in the wall, a mushroom, a dysfunctional ghost, a memory, or reincarnated into someone or something else? Hmmm maybe an eagle .

Do you believe in the five-second rule concerning dropped foods? Nope.

If you were a weed, what would you be? Dandelion.

How many ducks does it take to swim in a pond? I’ve been watching the Great British Baking Show and love the scenes of the gardens and ducks.

How many credible edible slices can you create from a 12″ pizza? It depends on how many kids are eating it.

You are watching a film, playing a game or otherwise occupied and thoroughly engaged and engrossed when suddenly the doorbell/telephone chimes/rings – do you answer it or let it go? If I know who it is I answer it, otherwise no.

“Oh my, it’s the end of the world as we know it! The unbelievable has happened, and the dead are rising as zombies and running rampage through your town – You have ten minutes to pack your survival kit for a world that has turned upside down – what five items will you be packing? My backpack is already loaded and goes everywhere with me but extra water, peanut butter, Hershey bars, protein bars and toilet paper😂
