Her heart was done, her luck run out, socializing over with, and she was beyond disappointed. As she passed by the club, music from Company C drifted out and she thought of how thrilled she was when on week six, her band had won the contest. Now since the war began, the variety was gone and military sentiment was popular again.

Haibun Monday 11-18-24: Sci-fi Haibun

SYW 11-18-24

Here are this week’s questions:

1.  What brings you the most comfort:
food, friends, a good movie, pets, a walk on the beach/in the park, something else. Being with my family such as this coming Sunday for a Thanksgiving get together is my most fun. Second would be a walk in the woods.

2.  Most of us love our food. Is there something you like but know you shouldn’t have it? Of course, but I find craving something and then actually having it, such as French fries—it’s never as good as I thought it would be. But a piece of rhubarb pie? I’m in!

3.   Do you prefer a garden of flowers or growing vegetables, or do you not have a garden? I had a few pots of flowers and one tomato plant on my patio this year. I enjoyed it.

4.  Would you like to be rich, I mean REALLY rich? If I was really rich I would give my children and grandchildren homes of their choice, anything else they needed and then stock the food pantry in town, build homes for the disadvantaged and maintain a free medical clinic.

Gratitude: I am grateful I have a get together with friends tonight.✌🏻

Running and Breathing Don’t Mix

Running and Breathing Don’t Mix

I admire those who run in the woods
Their commitment means they “have the goods”
I must admit I tried it before, it was comical
My one time effort illogical
I wanted to impress my mate
Who jogged every calendar date
I didn’t want to jiggle along
My knees singing sad songs a while.
I decided to actually run the mile
One half mile to the main road
And half mile back to my home
I took off, heard my mate say no
You should be much more slow
But I ignored as I often do
Thinking I better knew
I was feeling great I had undergone
The mile and then collapsed on my lawn
As usual my mate was right
Laying on the grass it was a fight
To breathe.

Monday Poetry Prompt: Difficulty, Reason, Run

The Sunday Whirl

***

The scents of a candle burning down stirred her sleep and Julie stretched out her arms, nudged Dickinson off the edge of her bed and surveyed the large space she called a bedroom. The old writer’s desk by the arched window shown an unrelenting pile of papers and dictionaries and Julie observed them with a sigh. It seemed the words would not come and the magic was gone. Maybe it was a sign, an end to her career writing novels. Dickinson rubbed against her, asking for a hug and Julie looked into the cat’s face. Could this friendly companion sense that Julie’s writing had become ordinary, not worth editing even? She grabbed her up and went back to bed.

“I say, are you a gaucho? I’m taking photographs of the local culture and I noticed you sort of herding that group of men.” The men in question were lined up, walking a familiar trail singing, oddly enough, Chinese work songs. The man on the horse gave the photographer a hateful look and spurred his horse on ahead. The young man with the camera looked around quickly and seemed to search for something. Looking desperate, he thought he never should have tried the local food special for lunch. He got into his car and looked for a Texaco bathroom. It was a safe place he thought, but his stomach sounded a huge growl and he thought he probably wasn’t going to make it.

PROMPT WORD:  BENEFIT

***

Promises of benefits I think they’re for the wealthy. The money floating in the wind for bribes is not stealthy. It’s in the open, all the crimes of the ne’er-do-wells. It’s almost like some voters were under evil spells. We sit in shock at suggested appointees. Now holiday vacations cannot be taken with any ease.

Savor the wild winds from the north

Their strength can be an ally, need

Furious winds companion be

The wild ones have their purpose, worth

Breezes cause a journey for seeds

Spreading wildly, helpful indeed

Blowing snow, flowing, riding forth

Farms, gardens rely on the breed

A boon for propagation seen

Clearing dead plants in a powerful swarth

Wild winds, increase the planting speed

Nature’s plan in its windy scenes

Winds have their special vocation

Wild winds can help food causation.
