Getting to Know You 61

Hello and happy timezones, kind friends! I have greatly enjoyed your responses to my Get to Know You posts.

So, it’s time. Come sit on my porch for a spell. Tea, lemonade and refreshments will be served shortly.

Here are 3 questions! Let’s go!

Round #61:

  1. If you could live a day as any type of animal, what would you choose and why? A wolf. They have families, mate for life and of course they are beautiful.
  2. What word do you still have trouble remembering how to spell? I have none I can think of, but spell check does a number on posts even after you edit🙄
  3. If you had to do karaoke, what song would you choose, and would you sing alone or as a duet? You wouldn’t want me to sing! Maybe row your boat?

*****For any participants that do NOT like restrictions, please feel free to participate in any way you would like. It is great to read the contributions!****
Set up a timer or sit near a clock so you can keep track of the six minutes you will be writing.
You can either use one of the prompts (photo or written) or you can free-write.
Get ready and write for 6 minutes, that is it! Can you write a complete story? Can you think of a new Sonnet? Can you write 400 words? 400? 500? There are no restrictions on what kind of writing you do, but you should try to be actively writing for six minutes.
After you are done writing, include your word count and then post back to this page #Simply6Minutes or include your link in the comments section. Pingbacks are enabled.
*Feel free to leave your work completely unedited. I believe it is good to see, especially for new writers, that even very seasoned writers don’t write a perfect first draft.*
Have fun, challenge yourself if you’d like, read and respond to others’ posts.
Thank you for participating!

I know what you’re thinking. I’ve got a big head, a big mouth with a lot of big teeth and they’re all extremely sharp. However, I can also be a nice guy. I’m proving that by saving this little baby duck that is getting lost from its mother. Baby ducks are usually all in a row as the saying goes and this one decided it wanted to visit me. I was just walking on a leash with my master in the park and all of a sudden we came upon this little duck all by itself. I looked over at the pond and there was the mother. She seemed to be counting out her babies, and was getting extremely stressed. Before my master even saw the baby duck, I spied it over by a rock. It might’ve thought the big rock was its mother. I really don’t know that much about baby ducks – all I know is that it was all alone, lost and needed to be next to its mother. I’m telling you this because I can see you’re looking at me like I’m a big mean dog and I’m going to eat this baby duck. Nothing could be further from the truth, I don’t even like duck!

The Writer’s Workshop

I chose number two:

Sometimes I have to vent. That is what I did as I wrote dVersePoets’ Cinquain today. I seem to be more outspoken as the year goes on. My mind is appalled. I have a hard time believing what I hear and see. My country is falling apart.

This is the time of year I always look forward to. I love the flowering trees. Watching daffodils and other spring flowers bloom is a refreshing type of miracle to me. What boggles my mind is how much beauty wills out in the face of a bleak future. These rulers of doom cannot outdo Mother Nature.

This Week’s Writer’s Workshop Prompts – April 17, 2025

Tanka Tuesday – Cinquain

Hi, syllabic poetry family. This is Selma, hosting for Tanka Tuesday. For this week’s challenge, I’d like us to write poetry that portrays movement. Poetry is a moving target; reality is always moving.

Choose any syllabic form and write what’s on your mind. If you aren’t sure what to write about, make us feel your thoughts as the seasons transition in your world.

If this is your first time at Tanka Tuesday? Here is what you do:

  • Write a syllabic poem using a syllabic form from the forms list HERE. If you write a freestyle poem, you must include a syllabic form with it.
  • #TankaTuesday does not accept AI-generated poetry.
  • Post your poem on your personal site/blog.
  • Include a link back to TankaTuesday.com in your post.
  • Copy the link of your published post into Mr. Linky. There are no recaps this year.
  • Remember to click the small checkbox about data protection.
  • Read and comment on some of your fellow poets’ work.
  • Like and leave a comment below if you choose to do so.
  • This challenge closes on Monday 4/21 at noon EST Detroit, USA.
  • Have fun!

#TankaTuesday Poetry Challenge No. 8, 4/15/2025: Choose a Syllabic Form

dVerse Poets

Being geeked with the busts made out of so many materials, in so many styles, with so many ways of communicating “issues tied to identity, mortality, power, and history,” I thought it would make a wonderful prompt. Searching through the dVerse archives, I found this most excellent prompt by Victoria C. Slotto from 2012, titled, “Sculpting a Poem.” After reading it, I realized I didn’t need to reinvent the wheel. Thank you, Victoria! I encourage you to read her prompt for guidance today.

New to dVerse? Here’s how to join in:
• Write a poem (in any form) in response to the challenge.
• Enter a link directly to your poem and your name by clicking Mr. Linky below
and remember to check the little box to accept the use/privacy policy.
• You will find links to other poets, and more will join so please do check
back later to read their poems.
• Read and comment on other poets’ work– we all come here to have our poems read.
• Please link back to dVerse from your site/blog.

Sara stood nervous, but strong, hoping her sheer will would captivate the audience. She started to shift a bit, a few words stumbled, but the rise of one watchful woman created a swing to motivate the crowd. The lonely speaker found she could go on, especially seeing her mentor rise and clap. That single stand started a wave of hands acknowledging Sara.

Look, a ring around the moon

The jungle is lighting up

Hear that noise, can be hostile

Listen, you can hear –

Slithering in through the grass

Even the air smells like snakes

These are odd conversations

Just a jungle myth
