Ratification

The piercing sound of a single shot rang out, followed by a grunt and then the saddening wail. A mass of black dots flashed up against the blue sky, now littered with tiny birds. Suddenly the wind stirred me and my phobia of seeing the beautiful animal destroyed shook me. I was chilled not only by the breeze but the sight before me.

What level of desperation must I seek to please my father? Accompanying him on his weekend hunting trips was one of the keys to satisfy him. Why did I need his stamp of approval at the age of twenty?

These questions flooded my mind as I leaned on the fence rail awaiting the nausea to pass. The sight sickened me as always, but he knew that. He pulled up the head of the deer, insisting I look. Laying it back down on the leaves, he stroked its head as if to offer some type of appeasement. I wondered if it was for the deer or me.

Oscar Night

Room 53 again, she thought, wondering if the old actress would remember her today. She had been summoned by the over bell as usual, at ten fifteen on the dot, interrupting her morning break.

Entering the room to a welcoming “There you are, my favorite nurse. How are you, dear?” Glad to see the woman was coherent for now, Colleen happily responded.

“I am feeling fine today, Miss Jones, and happy to find you looking well this morning.”

The nurse walked over and adjusted the woman’s pillows and pulled the afghan over her knees. “What are you planning to do today, Miss Jones?”

“I’m glad you asked me that Colleen. I need you to check my chiffon gown to see if it needs pressing. I have the Oscars tonight, you know, and must look my best. Being a star takes effort to look your best. Did the Harry Winston jewels arrive yet?”

Sammiscribbles Weekend Writing Prompt

Say what you will, but I’m literally not buying it. In fact, I take umbrage at this ultimatum! His initial request, some say a “campaign promise that got him elected”, which is offensive in itself, still boggles my mind. Now he’s using military funds to build the wall? It’s irritating enough that he’s using soldiers to man it, in the first place!

MLMM Saturday Mix 9-28-19

Our three words, using onomatopoeia are:

  • flutter
  • hack
  • mutter

***

The old man would mutter under his breath at the way of the world. It was a daily occurrence as he read the paper, rocking at various speeds depending on how upset he was at the time. Sitting in his favorite spot on the porch, occasionally he’d take a break when tired eyes insisted, and just stop to watch the birds. The birdbath was small entertainment, distracting him from the latest news, when he heard the flutter of their wings splashing in the water.

From time to time he would raise his cane and whack it on the porch rail, trying to dissuade pesky squirrels who raided the bird feeders. Of course the birds were also frightened away. His son offered to hack off the nearby branches to the feeder, thinking it would help discourage the squirrels, but the old man liked the wide spread of shade.

SoCS 9-28-19

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “ent” “ten” “net.” Use one, use two or use all three (bonus points for using two, double-bonus points for using all three). As Linda would say, use ’em any way you’d like. Enjoy!

Thanks Dan, for taking over while Linda is gone. I’ll use the next ten seconds reminding, actually hoping, that someone uses a net to trap the last three year experiment of presidential history, bag it up, and throw it away, not in a recycle bin to be used ever again.
