W3 Prompt #50: Wea’ve Written Weekly

Simply Six Minutes

We gather every night to stretch our wings, feel the power in our numbers, and travel to more interesting spaces. The cave is good for communication and camaraderie but the feeling of flying in the night sky is our idea of true freedom. We look upon the humans below and know they secretly wish for this. It is only in the darkness we all dwell in sadness.

J for Jasconius. It is said to appear like an island. In the middle high german version of the Navigatio sancti brendani abbatis (Von sente Brendan) transcribed by Dr. Thomas and F. Shannon it is said to have a small forest, a beach and even a small river on its back. It lures sailors by its appearence onto its back and as soon as they ignite a fire, it dives into the sea and kills the sailors. Some believe Jasconius is the whale that swallowed Jonah, from the Bible story.

dVerse Poets Prosery

“The seed of a poem lay dormant in my heart.”
~ from “Winged Words”, Valsa George

My sedentary life upon me, the hustle and busyness of years is gone by. Now I have time to reflect on what happened, how and why. It is strange how things so hurried then can now be played out slowly in perfect focus as time permits. And then, in this expanse of hours, the seed of a poem lay dormant in my heart. It wants to be recognized, visible and expressed.

I is for Ichchadhari, mythical shape shifting cobras in Indian folklore, and possess the gem called Naagmani, considered much more valuable than any precious stone, it has the power to revive. Legends tell of many people dying through snake bites when they try to steal the Naagmani. A common female cobra will become an ichchadhari naagin after 100 years of penance. After being blessed by Lord Shiva, they attain a human form of their own, have the ability to shape-shift into any living creatures and could live for more than a hundred years without getting old.

Naags and naagins will lose control and are forced to show their true form when they hear the sound of a been, a wind instrument used by a snake charmer.
