The page had now turned

The handmaiden fainted

Her indiscretion a burn

A note had been written

And now all was clear

The knight, indeed smitten

But the king thought it a smear

The king’s anger with punishment was announced

There will be a duel! And the poor knight was trounced.

On a back street, dusky”. I met her in our special place, behind the five and dime where Marie was a cashier. Exactly at five-thirty every day but Sunday, Marie would take her break and I would take mine from the gas station where I worked. On Sunday we might have a picnic in the park or take in a movie at the bijou. But nothing compared to the secret rendezvous every day. The back alley was quiet and we enjoyed a few minutes of privacy, always starting with a long, sweet embrace.
