Sleepless

“Do not go gentle into that goodnight”, well if only I could! Of course Dylan Thomas was speaking of death, and I agree, do not! But at two o’clock in the morning when everyone else is snoozing, I wouldn’t mind a bit of peace, quietly drifting into slumber, perhaps have a dream I could remember in the morning. I could be one of those “wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight”, and I would grieve its leaving because it meant another sleepless night was on its way. I long to gently go into a goodnight, just not a permanent one.

I started SnapChat a few years ago. I greet my grandkids each morning and night. It’s a short communication and sometimes fills a happy or sad gap in our days. There are many funny emojis or bitmojis to use and we all take advantage of them. Even YouTube songs can be snapped. My favorite bitmoji is faint: 😂

The people thinned as the clown entered. The fiddler stopped playing and the citrus seller stopped juggling the oranges. The typical discreet vendors pulled down their shades covering their booths, and the conventional crowd slipped away. The clown was clutching a raft of balloons, but since the movie “IT” came out, no one wanted to buy.

The ancient plaster was not ideal, but Joe liked the French style and shape of the rounded medallions on the ceiling. The old house did have a few rattles and the silky finish of the walls had been knocked around a bit, but he was convinced he could bring it all up to the taste of a discerning client. On a Monday, six months later, Joe was pleased with the excited reaction his new client projected. His positive thinking and hard work was about to pay off.

Here are this week’s questions:

1.  What is/has been your favourite job/occupation? My favorite job was my first (real) job I started the day I turned eighteen. During my time there I met challenges and many great people. Learning the federal government way of doing everything was not the way I was trained, but I learned a lot about cold regions, photogrammetry, how to work for more than one scientist at a time, and it’s funny now to think that the one of the places I used to dream about seeing is where I’m living now! 🦬

2.  Is there a job you would never consider doing? Probably quite a few, but I was happy in all the different jobs I had over the years in places we lived. I still miss working outside the home.👩🏼‍💼

3.  Did your family own a business and expect you to join the ranks when you got older? We had a dairy farm until I was fifteen.👩🏻‍🌾

4.  Did/do you have a career requiring qualifications or did you learn on the job and work your way up? I’ve had and liked both.🤓

Gratitude: I am always grateful for my family, always. This last week they helped me shop for flowers and set them up on my patio.🌸

Acquainted with the Night

I have been one acquainted with the night.

I have walked out in rain—and back in rain.

I have outwalked the furthest city light.

I have looked down the saddest city lane.

I have passed by the watchman on his beat

And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.

I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet

When far away an interrupted cry

Came over houses from another street,

One luminary clock against the sky

But not to call me back or say good-bye;

And further still at an unearthly height,

Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right. 

I have been one acquainted with the night.

I found this interesting poetry form and a lovely example by Robert Frost.

10-11 syllables in 3 line tercets

ABA, BCB, CDC,

Each line of the tercet sets the rhyme for the next. The last word of second line in one tercet provides the rhyme for the first and third lines in the next tercet.
