Life as I Wanted

I always wanted to be that “tall, dark and handsome” guy, but my legs are too short. I did find a woman I loved but it didn’t last and my baby left me for a fast-talking’ man. Of course he won her over with his generous compliments, and good looks which wooed her quickly before she realized he was a fake. It’s hard to feel sorry for her and as I sit here, now my bank account all my own, I can dream and read and travel as much as I like. It’s not the life I originally saw for myself, but I am free and that counts for a lot!

Joe Ledger

I titled this Joe Ledger because he is my all time favorite character as written by Jonathan Maberry.

“The series follows the titular Captain Joe Ledger, a former Army Ranger and Baltimore police detective. Joe is hired by a clandestine, investigative agency known as the Department of Military Sciences (DMS). The DMS is a shadow agency formed for the purpose of pursuing technologically advanced threats to the US and the world at large by terrorists. Threats encountered throughout the series range from designer pathogens that create zombies to transgenics used for ethnic cleansing.” Wikipedia

One of the reasons I love the characters the way Maberry writes them, is how he includes humor in dire situations. The first in the series, “Patient Zero” I didn’t even read until I had read some of the others, because I’m not into zombies, but if you decide to start this series, I recommend starting with Patient Zero.☺️

Shane shrugged in the near dark, her cream hued wings folded back. Only feeling unfathomable despair as flickering firelight lit up the scene—a silent witness to the broken bodies of two cunning demons. Earlier that day, Shane realized the gloaming in the clouds formed a message, an omen of evil coming. Still undone from the battle, all at once heat of the fire grew more intense and the flames leapt out and consumed the demon bodies. Shane thought this might be her own fate, but instead the flames provided an end to the evil foretold. Only deep black shadows remained and even they would disappear in dawn’s light.

Almost time for school to start

Which means the children part.

Remembering my own days of old

After freedom in summer’s gold

I could even smell the scent

Of paper, loved what it meant

Looked forward to school recharging

Even when playtime was departing

School to me was an adventure

Where learning new things was the center.

Went from calm to furious and felt sad defeat
I sneaked into the venue to hear the speech
All the lies were still “on repeat”
Dumbfounded and sometimes gobsmacked
That followers still listen with his facade cracked
Maybe they’re deaf or choosing to be
Either, don’t seem to face reality.

It would be a poor showing if I poured out all my feelings today, because every pore of my body is now calm and I don’t want to stir up anything. Reading the news and seeing videos of Greene and Boebert mouthing off to their colleagues, belittling and lying, shouting and accusing, it is very upsetting. How these horrible examples of women were elected to any office at all is beyond comprehension.

The Rental

“It looks okay to me”, Joe said matter-of-factly. “ and if we took the top floor, we’d have a balcony! I don’t know what that big opening is under the top floor, but it’s probably just an open door to somebody else’s apartment.”

“ You don’t think it looks really odd? I think it looks sort of creepy”, Julia remarked. Joe was just looking for a good deal and Julia was looking for a good home. Julia was the one who would be there during the night without Joe. She looked up again at the top. It looked nice, but then there was that opening underneath. She stared at it for a minute. All of a sudden something appeared in that hole, just for a second. It looked like a shadow, a white shadow, which was really strange because the sun was shining on that area of the building. She poked Joe in the ribs, saying, “ did you see that? It was in that hole or a doorway or whatever you wanna call it. It just appeared for a second. Joe, this place is too creepy for me. I don’t care how low the rent is.”

“But Julia, we can only afford a small place. Are you sure you don’t want to take a chance?” They both looked up at the top of the building once again, and suddenly whatever it was appeared in the opened doorway/hole again. Joe took Julia’s arm, turned away from the building and started walking down the sidewalk. “Think we’ll just look around a while; we’re not in a hurry after all…”

I ride the streets at night

Looking for a pitiful sight

Something that is losing life

His family, child and wife

Disease has threatened the village here

A grim reaper, I’m always near

The smell of death and decay

Draws me here every day

You look upon me with disgust

My existence is a must

I cull most unwell

Or death numbers swell

My job is not for everyone

It’s just a job that’s needed done.
