Irregular Ode to Arthritic Confectioners

🥧🍵🍛🍲🍰🥙🥗🧁

you already know of my cooking woes

tried no bake cheesecake next

had ingredients, lemons, garden hose

a grater, with a sharp knife, I’m vexed

can of sweetened condensed milk

everything combined should look like silk

trouble started when I squeezed the juice

added lots of zest no flavor to lose

the bowl of these hard wrought two

flew off the counter, I’m not amused

ever tried to pick up lemon zest from the floor?

it took a while, had to replace it with more

so again with the grater and hard to get juice

lucky I had more lemons to use

thank heavens I had a crumby crust

not sure I have crumbing actions I trust

remembered to cover the bowl

while whipping the mixture, making it whole

delighted the finished pie looked normal and fine

it’s the cleaning of all the messes that is the crime.

Poetics: Satiating the Soul

Racist comics and jokes

Claytoonz excerpt: https://open.substack.com/pub/claytoonz/p/rotten-republicans?r=482oha&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

“It’s easy for a white guy to say people shouldn’t be offended by racist jokes and we should just get over it. That’s what Trump’s running mate, JD Vance said, after the brouhaha over the racist jokes told at Trump’s Madison Garden Nazi rally.

JD lied, saying he hasn’t heard it because he believe America wants a vice president who lives in a bubble. JD said, “Maybe it’s a stupid, racist joke, as you said; maybe it’s not. I haven’t seen it. I’m not gonna comment on the specificity of the joke … but I think that we have to stop getting offended at every little thing in the United States of America, I’m just so over it.”

Even if it’s a racist joke, JD thinks we should just blow it off, or maybe wait until after election day to be offended.”

Vance reminds me of a song from “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” https://youtu.be/AALREbJZEZk?si=uVrajisfp_MJyXwX

I wish he and Trump would be “over it” in a galaxy, far far away…

Truthful Tuesday

***

I never considered myself a horror fan, but when Stephen King started pouring out all of his stories, I read most of his until I couldn’t keep up. Then recently I started listening on audio Jonathan Maberry‘s books, and fell in love with the character Joe ledger. After I had read most of his adventures I went back to read the very first one, “Patient Zero” and because it was about zombies I never had an inclination to read it. But I wanted to see the development of the Joe ledger character and this was the way to do it. After reading that and the rest of the series I went on to read more of Maberry’s books that were true horror …

I have read 27 of this group of books, so guess I am a horror fan. If the story includes the characters Joe Ledger or Sam Hunter, they are my favorites because they have wit and humor. I do not watch horror movies.

would be quiet and not talk to him. Joe had a handsome face, a great smile, and blue eyes that you could dive into. He usually sat in first class because he was often approached by women. Most of his flights were the end of a long business trip where he was constantly “on” and on the flights home he just wanted to relax. The flight attendants he knew well were used to this but sometimes on a full plane, he didn’t have a choice. Joe felt a tug on his suit coat and turned to see the woman next to him looking panicked. “I’ve never flown before! Is it safe? I’m really scared!” Joe assured her she was safe. He then talked to her in a calming manner and she seemed to settle. It was unusual for Joe to find someone he connected to, but this woman seemed to only want some reassurance about flying. Joe realized he had immediately stereotyped the woman and they both ended up as temporary friends.

The Writer’s Workshop

I chose number 3:

Winter is coming and I’m not in a castle on GoT. Here in Cheyenne you have an early warning system. It is wind! When the breeze turns chilly, the WIND is not far behind. There is hardly ever a time here when the air is not moving. Winds here cause semi trucks to roll over, and freeze icy roads. Airplane manufacturers test planes here in the wind. When I first moved here I wondered why everyone’s hair looked askew, it’s the wind!

#TankaTuesday Halloween Poetry Challenge, 10/29/24

OLWG – Heh, heh, heh

There were always some thirsty souls roaming in and out of Armando’s Market. It was a neighborhood staple, but some daring tweeners decided to try to steal a couple of cold ones. They snuck into the hall to the bathroom just when a canine officer with his police dog walked in, also looking for a drink. The owner, Armando, motioned for the officer to come near. “I have a couple of sneaky Pete’s in the hallway, mind checking them out?” Officer James sent his trainee dog into the hall. After a minute or two the dog walked out. “Huh?” Armando queried. The boys had given the thirsty dog a few drinks of the cold beer. When he returned to his trainer, the boys skipped out the back.

With Halloween this week, I thought I’d try a different approach.
Looking forward to reading your responses to these questions this week:

    1.   How would you describe a wicked witch? A witch that casts horrible sickening spells.

    2.  What would scare you most, a ghost or a headless horseman? Definitely a ghost.

    3.  If you were attending a Halloween themed fancy dress party, what would you go as? Oh that would be fun. Back in the 70s we hosted a Halloween party and we dressed as flower children.

    4.  Do you have many Trick or Treat visitors on October 31st? Since I moved into an apartment, none. It’s very disappointing, because I always loved it. When all types of costumes came up to the door.

For readers who do not recognise Halloween in their country, is there a tradition where children dress up other than weddings or birthday parties?

Gratitude: I am grateful I finally went to the doc. Symptoms led to a blood clot in the leg I broke on 3/25. Luckily I did!

Have you ever had a rough morning where you needed a laugh, wishing you had some cinnamon stick tea, water brewing over a hot flame? Then you pour it out, stir it up take a sip and get a shock. It is bitter and sour. Suddenly there’s a knock on the door and who should it be, but the cat in the hat! “Oh my dear, you need some cheer! Discard the tea and come with me. Let’s have a lark, we’ll go to the park. How fun it will be just you and me. We will play seek and hide, fly down the slide and anything else you prefer, this morning will just be a blur.”
