Joan hated Christmas shopping. Her husband Pete loved it. He took their children to the markets to find out what they wanted for Christmas and they grew up sharing their dad’s enthusiasm for the holidays. Knowing his wife was tired of all the hoopla about the season, Pete decided to surprise her. He told the children to keep it a secret, but they were too excited. When the five of them stopped in the small local market, they couldn’t hold it in any longer. “Mommy, we’re going to buy presents! Do you like this”, holding a fancy silver carafe.

The Chinese history of dragons starts in 3000 BCD and looks very different from European dragons. It breathes breath, not fire. First of this legend is Yan Emperor (炎帝 Yándì), a legendary Chinese leader from pre-dynastic times, who was born of an encounter with a powerful dragon. Later, he partnered with Emperor Huang Di and together they conquered their enemies, unified China and, according to myth, pioneered Chinese civilization. The dragon is significant and often in parades. The belief is dragons bring prosperity, bountiful harvests and good health.

Something I learned in November was I can’t believe everything my doctors say or what they prescribe to be right for me. My job as a patient is to be my own advocate, speak up, question and basically be a pita when they only want fifteen minutes. Multiple issues need to be researched at reliable medical sources. My doctor I like, but he can’t know or read everything, whereas I have plenty of time. I’m not saying be obnoxious and demanding, but do get your questions answered. I’m lucky to have a doc that will do that.

Recipe from Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book:

3 Tbsp chopped onion

1/4 cup butter

4 cups dried bread cubes (about 7 slices)

1/4 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper

1/2 tsp poultry seasoning

1/2 tsp sage – I always use more

2-4 Tbsp water or broth

Cook onion in butter. Combine with bread and seasonings.Toss with enough liquid to moisten. Enough for a 4-5 pound chicken. Double for a 10 pound turkey. Optional: add giblets, mushrooms, celery (I add celery), raisins or chestnuts.
