The room is dark except for the small scented nightlight. The snow plows on the main road, and the sad sound of a fire truck broke the silence. Some poor family might be stranded in this freezing weather, or a motorist slipped out of control on the ice. A winter night exposes tragedy. The young men cannot keep up with their shovels for the wind is filling in snow as fast as they clear it. A dog’s howl insures others will answer. Every being is feeling lonely and cold tonight.
The room is dark and the scent of the nightlight cannot dispel the loneliness. She hears a car drive by, but it’s not stopping here. No one is coming to break her mood. She sips the tea, but cannot eat. Her body aches, but not for food, or sleep, but for the company of his love. Her mind plays tricks, causing her to see him in the shadows. Could it be? Would she turn on the lamp and see him there? She dared not because she knew he wasn’t, no matter how much she wished it.
The scented nightlight caused a small shadow in the dark room. As she pulled the covers around her, she could almost feel him beside her. His warmth, his body next to her. She curled up and nestled into her pillow, wanting it to be him. She covered her head with the warm blanket, hiding from the nightlight glow. She wanted to shut everything out, to just pretend he was there. She drew the covers in, as if they were his arms holding her tight. The cold, the loneliness, wouldn’t reach her here. She would sleep and dream of him.
The room was dark and the nightlight glowed. The snow was still falling, but the night sounds were quieting. The plows stopped, the shoveling men retreated till morning. The animals finally slept. The winter night’s cold was unrelenting. The lanes were freezing icy trails. Jack Frost painted glass with beautiful designs. She fell asleep to dream.

Their perception skewed
Only wonderment viewed
It’s a lesson for all
Life’s see-saw rises and falls
But the ruckus ignored
When a playground’s aboard.

It was often she felt the longing, irresistible feelings for the guilty pleasure. Many people had this experience and she wanted it too. It seemed forever since the longing had been satisfied, the relief from the inner pangs, the release of endorphins. She would wake in the night with this undeniable craving, reaching out in her dreams, finding nothing there.
It was becoming overwhelming, vmasking her ability to complete ordinary tasks during the day, and at night it was almost unbearable. Sitting alone in the evening her mind would turn to these thoughts and no matter how much she tried to push them away, she didn’t succeed. Thoughts of his warm sweetness on her lips made her salivate.
This night she could bear it no longer. Still in her pajamas, she threw on her coat and ran to her car. The time to reach her destination seemed endless. Then by the river, surrounded in moonlight, she saw him. He was standing in the middle of a small crowd in the park. She made herself keep to a walk as she approached him.
The funnel cake vendor.
I am in an apartment complex. I have a square piece of cement that is supposed to be a patio but has a bunch of grass between the cement and parking lot pavement. One perfectly able woman “walks” her dog and lets it poop on (my) area of grass almost every day. Summer is coming and I don’t want to see it or smell it if I choose to sit on my cement square.
Today she looked right at me and let her dog do it’s thing. It’s only a few yards further on the sidewalk to the area she is supposed to be using. An alternative—use your own damn grass!
So after a trying time with WP deleting my typing while trying to write a story, I was not in a gracious mood. After a year and a half of putting up with this behavior, I reported her to the manager’s office. Next time I hit a store I will purchase a sign for my piece of grass. Rant over🤨

(In a book I just finished, a political leader says: “You can kill a country as easily as a man, you just take away hope”.)

The same old story; mean, pugnacious politicians burgeon on with their ideas that are a fallacy, inadequate thoughts spoken loudly to sedate minds and equate these lies to initiate action with dire consequences.

This week’s Story Starter teaser is: YOU CHOSE TO DO WHAT YOU DID, BUT NOW THAT I KNOW WHAT YOU DID, YOU’VE LEFT ME NO CHOICE.
Nope, I’m going back to the A&P! I don’t care if it takes extra gas, it’s all your fault! I open up the package of chicken breasts to find chicken gizzards! Yuck! You may have grown up elsewhere but we live in Canada now and I’m never cooking anything like this disgusting mess, ever! She shuddered as she wrapped the butcher paper back tightly again and grabbed her keys.

This story inspired by my trip to the grocery yesterday looking for chicken breasts.🤢

It’s supposed to be right here in this box. Could you speak up Joe? My earpiece is failing. I know, it’s supposed to look like a mailbox—or something, but it’s a great message holder for us undercovers, as long as we hurry. What? I have the wrong box? The wrong tree? Jeez Joe, make up your mind, I can only hold this small disguise so long. It would be a disaster if I suddenly transformed back into a human! Is the message in a pink envelope with lipstick kisses all over it? Okay then, got it! Mike scurried down the tree trunk and ran over to his car, now transforming back into a human.
