For this Prosery Prompt, I’ve chosen the following line
“I am the creature who smells your darkest thoughts”
From “Jaguar Song.” Read the entire poem here.
***
Trying to sleep, I roll over, my sight turned away from the window. Closed blinds don’t keep the outside safety lighting from my room and I don’t use drapes. As a result the entire room is alight. My habit of covering my head with the covers helps me simulate darkness. The lack of light doesn’t keep my imagination from seeing it; however my mind works when it refuses to slow and let me sleep. “It” roams around, unchecked, as if to speak, “I am the creature who smells your darkest thoughts”. I know it’s ridiculous, at least in the daylight hours, but at night, the darkest of my day, I hear it. I’ve tried to scare it off, rising up suddenly and flipping my covers. Of course I see nothing and settle back into my cocoon, trying to think of something pleasant, and sleep.

Cheryl, been there, done that. There is a fine line between distracting yourself with non-threatening thoughts that are like warm fluffy sheep and falling into rumination that keeps you awake. Have you tried drinking hot nettle tea before bed? It’s very good at bringing drowsiness and gives such vivid dreams.

Middle of the night thoughts are not rational. I hope this isn’t real–because I think this could be a horror story, and there really is something out there!
