One of the worst vacations we ever took was when we lived in Houston, TX and road tripped to my in-laws in Colorado. We had three small children who were ignored and literally shoved aside by cousins when wanting to interact with their grandparents. My father-in-law had remarried and they had two children in between our children’s ages. So you can picture the dilemma. My parents lived in NE and we traveled there every other year, and they would have been loving grandparents, but passed away. When we moved back to CO, we were close and saw the in-laws more often, but the relationship as true grandparents was never there, so sad for our children. So if you live close or in the same home, don’t take loving grandparents for granted. My own grandparents lived with us and I appreciated them.

It’s always so frustrating to go to all that effort for nothing.

I think we take them for granted sometimes. I wish my children had them because they were close in distance but no, didn’t happen.
