Sadness overtook her again as she stepped out of the cemetery area and into the waiting taxi. She knew the deceased was only one of the new men who joined protests against racism. They were all eager and brave, ready to right wrongs with the hope to be heard. At the meetings, energy surged and many talked of what might be accomplished if they stood strong together. She maintained the positive attitude while speaking of future plans to meet at the park and conduct a peaceful gathering. She smiled, surprised but pleased to see many young people in attendance. But that smile was the last smile to come upon her face. Shots rang out and members of the group suddenly fell down to the grass.

You evoke the grief of the injustice and also the futility of whole endeavour to end racism.

Freedom fighters from decades and decades ago to present day … their stories never fail to devastate. Well done.

An all too common tragedy for those who try to fight oppression.

So well told… alas there are always those who think that they have that right in the name of a perceived freedom for them being under siege.

Leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, Cheryl, and infinite sadness that efforts at peace are often met with such violence and death.

Poignant story. One that unfortunately still rings true in this world. 😦

Heartbreaking scenario, Cheryl. Power hierarchy will do its best to crush any challenge to it. Too bad people die for freedom but history shows it is a price too-often paid 😦
