Marcus dragged the sodden body up onto the slate pathway. Stricken by this saddest vision—all of Peter’s vital attributes soaked and gray, Marcus’ tears would not stop. He knew in these times of colonial governments and secret forbidden rendezvous, Peter’s body lying there was not exactly a surprise. The pressure of their “improper” romance was more than his lover could take.

Yes, it certainly was a different time in history. One that would try even the most resolute if they did not conform to the norms of the day. Sad but likely all to true of a story.
