Children of Today
Seeds of doubt, seeds of hate,
Overshadowing seeds of hope and discovery
Planted in toddlers to persuade them
Of beliefs visited upon you by previous generations
Their innocence betrayed for your desired future
The open minds thirsting for knowledge-
Blank canvasses for your paint

‘Their innocence betrayed for your desired future’ – that’s exactly right. How sad!

This line spoke to me today,
“Of beliefs visited upon you by previous generations”
I have been reflecting on the connections between my grandparents, parents, and myself. I am wondering more about what is passed on and what wasn’t. Your poem brought that to mind.
Thanks for sharing.

It’s both hopeful and despairing. We need to plant well!

So sadly true Cheryl. Hatred and prejudice is learned not inherent. This also offers hope that change may happen if nurtured.

Black canvases still make for beautiful art. There’s certainly a reason to continue to allow children to love and appreciate art, even if they don’t quite “get it” yet. Nicely chiseled, well-formed, elegantly produced – judging from the other responses, I think you’ve produced something worth discussing.

They are like sitting ducks aren’t they. Bombarded by messages from every direction. Parents need to be on standby when they ask for clarification.

Your quadrille resonates with me, Cheryl; my grandson is three and picks up things so quickly. It’s so important to keep children protected from seeds of doubt and seeds of hate.

Such care is needed to plant the seeds of hope, love and discovery. Equal care to sort out the weeds of hate.

I have both fear and hope of the seeds that we might sow in their mind… maybe all we can do is to make sure that the soil is good

Trying! My grandkids have wonderful parents so I am lucky.

Anything planted in those little minds can grow. We should be careful.
