The black dog followed them home. The grandfather was hesitant at first, remembering the legend about black dogs, but the children were so excited to see the friendly dog, their pleas were too much for the old man. With their parents now gone, the dog was a welcome and needed surprise.
Immediately drawn to the animal, the children scurried to find him a place in the kitchen. An old horse blanket from the barn would serve as a bed and the new member of the family seemed happy to have it.
Even the other farm animals were friendly to the newcomer, which was unusual. The grandfather didn’t want any problems and the children were so happy, he thought the dog must be an unexpected blessing.
That night as the little ones said their prayers, the grandfather knew it was true.
