True Beauty

***

“Not everyone likes a show off, Marty. What exactly do you see in her anyway? She’s pretty, I’ll give you that, but what’s behind the beauty? I see nothing much at all.” Marty’s mother was not a bad person, really, and as I write this, I think you will see what I see over everything else–a sad woman afraid to lose her son, her only contact with the outside world.

“Mom, you have to get to know Julie, you’ll be impressed.”

His mother shook her head, “Men are fools. They only see what they want to see. Give her ten years and you’ll be looking for another!” This sarcastic attitude came from her own experience and sadly now, she was visiting it upon her son. Marty’s father had left her for a younger woman, and Marty was paying for that mistake.

“Mom, I know she is beautiful, but that’s just the outside. She is outgoing, has a good career, nice family, and volunteers at a shelter. And here’s the part you’re going to like best–she goes to your church.” Marty thought that would do it. His mom attended church three times a week and spent the day. It was her only social activity. It was his frequent chauffeuring of his mother that led to meeting Julie in the first place.

Marty’s mother had no choice to accept that Marty might be right after all. “All right then, ask her over for dinner.”
