The old man would mutter under his breath at the way of the world. It was a daily occurrence as he read the paper, rocking at various speeds depending on how upset he was at the time. Sitting in his favorite spot on the porch, occasionally he’d take a break when tired eyes insisted, and just stop to watch the birds. The birdbath was small entertainment, distracting him from the latest news, when he heard the flutter of their wings splashing in the water.
From time to time he would raise his cane and whack it on the porch rail, trying to dissuade pesky squirrels who raided the bird feeders. Of course the birds were also frightened away. His son offered to hack off the nearby branches to the feeder, thinking it would help discourage the squirrels, but the old man liked the wide spread of shade.
