MLMM Sunday Writing Prompt 5 by 5 – Sufferin’ Succotash

***

Carol and I were sitting down to watch Sylvester and his friends on the small black and white snowy television screen. It was Saturday and we had just finished splashing around outdoors in the dirt driveway puddled from rain.

After watching Sylvester sputter and spit which although was an impediment, made him famous and was a delight to children illustrating the fact no one is perfect, and even a problem with your speech could make you lovable. Children observe and copy, sometimes good knowledge is absorbed, and our parents were too busy to ever be concerned over what we were watching.

After TV, we decided to take lunch for the day consisting of the necessary cans of Campbell’s baked beans, a canteen of water, some apples, can opener, and white bread for sandwiches. Packed all in an old canvas bag, we headed into the woods. When we traveled in far enough, we found mossy rocks to sit on and opened the bag for our bean sandwich lunch. We never used blankets there, we preferred the bed of soft moss and ferns. We would spend the rest of the day walking around, looking for wildflowers or mushrooms growing on tree bark to paint on, and hoped for a deer sighting.

Seeing deer in our woods wasn’t exactly rare, but we weren’t allowed to have this adventure during hunting season. Occasionally you would see the beautiful creatures at a brook, or near our apple orchard, but they usually stayed hidden in the wooded areas. We would always carry apples in our pack in case we might hear or see a deer. We would leave them in an obvious place to be easily found. We would wait and watch from behind some tree or bush, hoping to see a creature eat the apple. Carol and I must have been spied on from the branches above since the creatures who came first to retrieve the treats were squirrels, chipmunks or skunks. In case of the latter, we high tailed it back out to the meadow.
