Don’t brood, take a random chance!

Charlie just stood there, his mouth open looking rather silly. He was staring at the lottery ticket with unbelieving eyes. Two hundred million dollars and all he did was scratch off a random dollar ticket. He took a chance with a dollar scratch-off every Friday, on payday. He never thought he would actually win!

He stumbled over his words to the clerk behind the 7-11 counter. Every Friday after receiving his paycheck for the week, Charlie’s routine was stopping by this store for a Big Gulp. He mowed grass with those huge lawn mowing machines all summer long and this was a meager treat he allowed himself once a week.

After work he would return to his brooding Grampa, sitting on the porch to welcome him. If you consider that Charlie listening to his gramps complain about everything from the heat to his sciatica, I guess you might think it was a welcome home. Charlie and his gramps lived in a rundown home on the outskirts of town. No mortgage fees any longer, and it being just the two of them, they both settled into a saddened life.

Charlie could hardly believe it even when the clerk confirmed his winnings. Suddenly hot, tired Charlie felt a lift, and a huge rare smile seemed to stick to his face permanently. He drove home quickly, still on a cloud nine high, and greeted his Grampa with a huge hug. His gramps practically fell out of his rocker, but hugged Charlie back. “What’s going on, son?”

“Gramps, you’re not going to believe it!”

  1. Over twenty years ago I pulled a sticker off a Big Gulp and it said I won the CD of my choice from a store at the mall. I went through every CD and finally picked a double CD sound effects. I still use the sound effects when I’m making videos.
