Picture Prompt-35

“We’ve got him, sir.  Yes, he’s running down the middle of the highway, hard to miss in that orange jacket.  We’ve got him in our headlights, he’s not getting away this time.”

“Good, pick him up and bring him in.”

Jack was running as fast as he could, but they were going to get him.  Maybe he should dart to the side and into the woods.  He couldn’t really see along the side, only the cement barrier.  “Why haven’t they stopped to get me”, he thought.  “I can’t keep running.”

The police car came up closer behind Jack, and Jack stopped running.  They put handcuffs on him and were about to put him inside the car, when they both fell to the ground.  They were immobilized for a few minutes and Jack reached down, got the key, and unlocked the cuffs.

Jack was wondering if this would happen.  It happened before, and that’s why they were arresting him.  Earlier in the day he was getting lunch at the local diner.  Since he was just passing through town, he had asked around to find some place for good food.  They recommended the diner.  The waitress at the counter took a shine to him and offered a free piece of pie after his meal.  When she handed him the plate, their hands touched, and she suddenly fell faint.  Jack was shocked, as were the other patrons.  He looked around, people started to stand up and Jack was frightened of what they might do.  He turned and ran out of the diner and kept running until the police stopped him.

He had no idea how this happened.  But now it happened again.  He had to get away.  He jumped into the police car and drove away as fast as he could.  There was only one place he wanted to go.

He had left the institute a week ago.  Escaped was more like it.  They had been studying him for a while.  Studying him included excruciating tests, making him dizzy, weak and disoriented.  He hated being kept against his will.  The tests involved were done by scientists and “doctors”.  They wanted information about his “touch”.

He’d only had these spells since he came back from Tibet.  He and his college friends decided to research some of the religions they had been studying and this trip was a bonus for the course.  After they arrived, they visited a temple that proved to be more interesting than they imagined.  When they first entered they were surprised to see monks actually levitating.  They had read of this, but couldn’t believe it until they saw it with their own eyes.  Naturally they wanted to investigate and learn how this was done.

Young and adventurous, their curiosity served as an override to caution. Jack was the first to have a one on one session with the leader of the temple.  Explaining himself and being open minded, he was easily led by the master.  Jack didn’t realize how powerful the sessions were until back in the states, he accidentally bumped a stranger on the bus.  He offered a hand to help and the person fell unconscious.  It was only temporary, but this happened a few times.  Luckily it didn’t inflict permanent damage, as far as he knew.  But he didn’t know everything.  The sessions with the master were secret and Jack didn’t realize what happened in all of them.  It was as if he was in some type of trance.

Jack was careful after this happened the first times.  That’s why he quit school and traveled, not wanting any permanent connections.  Apparently he was the only one affected by the sessions, but he didn’t really want to know.  He just knew he had to keep moving, only stopping to work enough for meals.  He didn’t need much, and he couldn’t make any connections with others.  He had no idea if this curse would last.

Traveling in the police car was not the way to stay hidden, so a few miles up the highway he ditched it and started walking again.  His destination was a man he read about in an Internet cafe.  He wanted to know why he was like this and how to stop it. In the next town he would find another coffee shop to do more research.  He hoped the men who stopped him were okay.  He never wanted any of this.  He wondered why the master gave him this ability, this curse.  He hoped to find the answers soon.  He was tired of running.
