Visual Prompt-1945

As the old woman sewed her wares, memories of her childhood drifted in and out of her mind.

The days of running free with my brothers on the plains of this state, Arizona.  I am glad to still be living here in this warm place, but sitting here can take a toll on my body.  To think I used to run faster than my brother, and ride very well, too.  I have to admit he was better with the bow.  My arms were not as strong as his to be accurate with the arrow.  We loved to swim in the river near our camp.

Those days of the Apache are now gone, along with my family.  My only family is my dog.  He keeps me company as I sit and sew.  Occasionally I am asked for my picture.  It doesn’t bother me.  Our heritage dwindles.  Maybe a picture of me would live on to pique a mind into learning our culture.  There are only bits here, while we sell our wares.  These bits of history may live on a while.  The rugs so popular when I was young, are still wanted today.  I can’t make those, I have to be satisfied with the trinkets I can make here at this market.  People just want a souvenir made by a “real American Indian”.  They don’t want to hear the history behind it, or how it’s made.  They don’t want to know about our trials in life.  They only want to make a quick purchase.  That is alright with me.  I am happy to sit and sew with my memories.
