Daily Prompt:  Eerie

2:32pm. Train whistle. Strange, even though there is plenty of train traffic here in this small city. It’s sort of a central hub for parts of the west. What’s odd about it, is hearing it in the daytime.

When I lived in a small town in Colorado, the night was filled with scheduled whistles, and the regular traffic was often stopped so the coal trains could pass. The longest stop was at the “turnaround”, of course inconveniently located next to the grocery, and busiest road out of town.

At night the 100 cars of the coal train, each car loaded with 100 tons of coal, would lumber through town, whistling at each stop. The sound was ordinary, not eerie, until it was a nonstop shriek, and I would sit upright in bed, wondering if it stopped for some horrifying reason. Was there a stalled car, a cow, deer, elk, on the tracks? Worse, a person? The low whistles of the nightly trains were comforting. The unusual louder, repeated warnings were frightening.

    1. I read every SK book until I couldn’t keep up with him. The scariest to me was “It”. Maybe tonight, after dark, I’ll look up your suggestion on Amazon. Maybe….🎃🕸👻

    2. IT was an absolute classic. Sometimes they come back was a short story in his Night Shift collection (one of the few good ones in that book). The movie starred Tim Matheson and wasn’t too bad but the sequels were crap! But the way they did the tain whistle and approaching train was quite good for a B grade movie.

    3. Favorite movie adaptation was “Stand by Me”. One reason was I was the age of the boys in the film at the same time. What? Well, you know what I mean. Your fave SK book?

    4. Yeah Stand By Me was good. I’ve always been a fan of the books because I don’t think too many movies do King justice. Although the movies King has had a hand in are better than the ones he didn’t.

There was also a few extended versions of his movies which are much better than the original Hollywood movies.

IT or Christine were probably my favourite books, but I also loved Cujo. However the one he wrote for his kids Tears of a Dragon? (Eyes of a dragon) for me provide he was much much more than just a horror author. Side note, Joe Hill writes some really good stories too.

    5. He is an unusual writer, been doing it a long time.i used to read a certain author until I couldn’t find anything more. He is too prolific. The movies in general never as good as the books. IMO😌
