The Bag Lady

There is no fruit so mysterious

As one that drives you to delirium

Expensive whether little or big

I have yet to know the trick

It should feel firm and not too soft

Otherwise it may be “off”

It entices with its flavor

And when it’s ripe, it’s yours to savor

It likes to appear forbidden

Keeping every delight hidden

Until you give it a slight feel

Think it’s ripe and time to peel

You start to drool, reveal each inch

The dark green off, teeth start to clench

The light green you looked forward to

Is now mostly black in hue

Who knows the secret of this fruit

That hides behind the dark green suit?

When it is over, said and done, it was a time and there was never enough of it. There can never be enough of that first sight, that first butterfly movement inside, your touch and my response, deeply felt and cherished. It was this feeling we shared for a while, for a few years, only to be diminished by the everyday machinations of life. It was for me a believed dream that ended softly, slowly, and disappointingly.

Just reading other posts here, I’m hungry!

1. Denny’s Super Bird. I copied and made this for customers when working at a sundries shop in an office building. It’s not easy because the tomato tends to slide off when grilling.😄

2. Tuna Salad. My version is: Chicken of the Sea brand white albacore tuna packed in water, with fresh lemon squeezed over it, sweet relish, chopped onion, celery, mayo and mustard. I’m not really a lettuce person, but lettuce and tomato added on the toasted bread or just the tuna salad in a tomato is good as a main dish lunch.

3. Grilled cheese of course, who doesn’t like this sandwich? Dark or seeded bread with sharp Vermont cheese is my choice, or the old sliced American cheese always good.

4. Patty Melt : Basically an oval shaped lean beef cheeseburger to fit two slices of buttered grilled rye bread. Grilled onions may be added. There are many versions of this classic.

Writing this and it’s 1:30 with no breakfast or lunch, I realize I like hot fattening sandwiches best and now extremely hungry. But I have tuna ingredients, so I’d better get making it! As Julia Child always finished her program: “Bon appetit!”

When night meets day, I can sleep

Dark of night brings things to weep

Why sadness in the black of night

Then recedes in the morning light

A mystery to me I have yet to solve

As with the earth, it all revolves

Memories or wishful thoughts

Come and go, so we are taught

But in the blackness of the night

I fail to see those delights.
