dVerse Poets Poetics

Your challenge is to write a poem that starts with a surprising hook, which can be one to three lines, but must develop into a fully-fledged poem.

It can be on any of the topics in the Larkin poems I have given as examples: parents, a mower, a day in your life, trees; or a topic of your choice. The style and form of your poem are up to you. I would just like you to hook us on your opening lines (pun intended).

If you are new to dVerse and/or Poetics, here’s how to join in:

  • Write a poem in response to the challenge;
  • Enter a link directly to your poem and your name by clicking Mr Linky below;
  • There you will find links to other poets, and more will join, so check back for their poems;
  • Read and comment on other poets’ work – we all come here to have our poems appreciated;
  • Please link back to dVerse from your site/blog;
  • Comment and participate in our discussion below, if you like. We are a friendly bunch of poets.
  • Have fun.

do as he asked. After all, it wasn’t such a big thing…many people engaged in this activity all the time. It’s even a lifestyle, only I think that’s taking it a bit too far. She packed quickly, hoping she wasn’t giving herself time to think too deeply. That evening they drove to the destination, Arthur anticipating a wonderful adventure. Sharon was getting more nervous every minute. Arthur didn’t expect her final reaction…bolting as soon as the car reached the parking lot. It didn’t help Arthur one bit as the lot was crowded and a huge sign in the middle. The sign was big and bold reading, “Connect with Nature” and in smaller print, “clothing prohibited”.

Pick 3 4-29-25

We were on our way back from a tension related shopping trip. It had been a struggle between sets of anticipating grandparents, and the second my mother-in-law locked onto her idea of a pink newborn cake, the groans began. My parents wanted to try the chocolate mud dome cake and other parents wanted to have a half pink colored version of a candy crush monstrosity. It had already been decided the baby was going to be a girl, so one family could only think pink. My husband and the other men in the family opted for the chocolate dome. My mother and the other women wanted pink decorations and it ended up being chocolate with pink bows. I think this
is proof these controversies will never be settled.

The old man’s voice was just a croak. He was of course a homeless bloke. A rich looking man was passing by. The old man gave a big sigh. The passerby asked if he needed a cloak, and the old man started to cry. “Oh yes, please”, he pleaded, “thank you kind sir”.

“Well, get a job!” and left very quickly as if in a blur!

Tires screeched as the getaway car raced through narrow streets of the Back Bay. Everyone crowded around, pushing the barriers set up by the film crew. Just as the car zoomed by, many people tried to capture the scene with their phones. They all wanted a picture of Tom Cruise in the car, speeding down the street, but what they got was a blurred photo that showed nothing. Later in the evening, the film crew spread out in the local cafes and restaurants. Tom Cruise appeared for an hour to satisfy his fans and promote the new movie.
