Fandango’s Story Starter

This week’s Story Starter teaser is:

The text message said, “Meet me behind the water tower at midnight. Come alone and don’t tell anyone.” Joe read it again. He really liked Julie, but never thought of her as the impulsive type. He changed out of his work clothes and into jeans and a hoodie. He pulled up the hood thinking she wanted this meet to be a secret. He snuck out his bedroom window thinking he couldn’t wait till he had a place of his own, slid down the tiled roof and jumped off into the backyard. Made it, he thought and didn’t even rip his jeans!

Joe turned onto the street leading to the water tower. There wasn’t a soul around and he started jogging. As he approached the water tower, Julie peeked around the corner and they met. Julie was totally upset. She had been crying and her face was puffy and red. Joe really didn’t know what to do. “What’s wrong?” He asked and she just fell into his arms and started crying again.

“It’s my mom, she’s really mad at my dad. I think they’re going to get a divorce!”

“Even if that’s true, you’re ready to move out anyway, right?” Julie stepped in and pushed Joe in the chest. He didn’t know what to do or say. Apparently what he did say was not right. Joe and Julie had many long conversations about moving out together, so thought that was what she wanted to hear. “ I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. I don’t know what to say.”

Julie went and hugged him. Two young lovers in a quandary. Joe decided to walk Julie back to her parents’ home and see if the four of them might be able to talk it out and find middle ground. Julie’s parents were surprised at Joe’s maturity. The conversations began.

Simply Six Minutes

***

Ellen looks up to see what floor

Elevator trips she abhorrs

Julie in front trying not to feel

Jerry’s shoe cramming her heel

Jerry is just hoping his boss didn’t see

The report unfinished, laying on his desk, free

And then there’s Mary, the inquisitive type

Watching Julie because she has interesting hype

Frank looks at Jerry, he’s so jealous of him

Thinks Jerry can do better, though just a whim

Helen is fed up with the whole coworker group

She rolls her eyes as if she’s not in this loop

Office companions with secrets aplenty

All wishing they were once again twenty.

Misinterpretation

He was sitting there, looking like he’s talking to someone at the same table…why did he ask me if he was already engaged? There was another gentleman sitting next to him…a double date perhaps? I hid behind a larger tree on the sidewalk and just watched for a while. I wasn’t about to walk in there when it looks like the table is full and what would I do? I would feel like a fifth wheel. But it always comes down to me, she thought…my menial brain goes into a kind of “you’re inadequate” quandary instead of just bucking up and walking right in as if I belong there. That’s always been my problem. I don’t feel like I belong anywhere.

Melissa misinterpreted James’ invitation to tea. The two gentlemen were waiting for her. Melissa seemed an excellent candidate. The woman sitting with the two gentlemen was an experienced employee they hoped would help convince Melissa to join their company.

Writing Prompts – Wishes

***

I’ve had some luck with wishes

My life is mostly varied dishes

One day sunset hues in a wine here

Then I complain about a salmon sear

Macaroni and cheese says it is clear

Comfort food wishes are very dear

Salad, a dish so variety hued

You forget it’s a healthy food

Now soup might be an inspiration

Wishing it’s already a made creation

It takes work and imagination

To cook up wishes that cause elation

All in all wishes can come true

With perseverance and action too.

Carla Loves to Read

I’ve read many books by VE Schwab, starting with “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” which I loved. I also loved the “A Darker Shade of Magic” series. This book is the first of two in a different series, “Vicious”. Also, the narrator is excellent.

“Victor and Eli begin as college roommates and discover that near-death experiences, under the right conditions, can create superhuman abilities.”
